Kompoz Album Volume 1: Need Artwork
Thu, Apr 10, 2008 • 09:39 AM CDT - By raf

CD TemplateWe're making an album! Fame and fortune may be just around the corner for you. Over the next few weeks, we'll be compiling the track list and working on all the legal details (BMI, licensing, etc.). The album will feature songs created here on Kompoz (of course), and it will be distributed through CD Baby, Amazon MP3, and iTunes. Exciting stuff.

What we need now is help with the album cover. Anyone with artistic talent and who is interested in contributing, please send me a PM. Actually, we need more than just the cover art... we need a full CD Jewel Case design with front cover, back cover, and insert (with liner notes). You'll receive full credit within the liner notes for your artistic contribution.

Our goal is to produce several volumes, one each quarter or so (depending on how well this one goes). Creative title ideas for the album are needed too (remember, there will be a series of albums released).

By the way, ignore the CD Jewel Case diagram shown. It's just there as eye candy for this post. We'll be using NationWide Disc for the CD production. Please see their Specs & Templates page. The design should include an 8-panel insert, CD art, and clear tray.

Very exciting, Raf! I think a nice idea could be to include either pictures or signatures of the people on the album? Another idea that I like is to put flags or some other indication of the countries represented.

EDIT: ...and i hope you will call it "Kompoz Kompilation Volume 1"

PS..Unless you implement a way for people to not jump on the site to grab their fav tracks off the album for free we'll be in competition with ourselves..and people love "free".

I like "Distant Digital Sketches Vol I"! I thought about the grab-free-track issue, but I think that it won't be a huge problem. Some will pay just for the goodwill aspect. Some will pay for the convenience of the iTunes & Amazon integration. Some will pay because they don't want to spend the time finding the track on Kompoz (or won't know that they can find it on Kompoz). We can add content to the site too that states something to the effect of "get CD-quality version of this song on iTunes, support the members, etc." It's an interesting experiement.

PLEASE feel free to use the title if you dig it.

If anything is to be learned by Radiohead's "Pay what you want" experiment it's that people will rarely choose to pay for music if there's an option not to UNLESS we make it easier to do that than find and DL for free. Also I think if we price the entire thing cheaply we'll do better. I believe if it's 4-5 bucks for the entire collection people will go that route for the ease of one stop shopping.
Another suggestion I have is if you make the downloading of the full mixes from this site only available to members who have uploaded first, that will cut the potential problem off almost completely.

I will buy it for all of the above reasons Raf.

Any way that the project owner can have input as to which mixdown track is used?

Me with Mister Nice Guy
  Thu, Apr 10, 2008 @ 03:33 PM CDT

@Lonnie - Yes, of course. And I suspect we'll do some remastering of the selected tracks for the purpose of CD-quality production, balancing, etc. I've been listening to some tunes in the car and I often find myself thinking "this one is great, but the vocals are a bit burried", and the like.

Great idea Raf, good luck selecting tracks..Do you have a theme in mind for each volume or a little of everything? Can't wait!!!!!

  Thu, Apr 10, 2008 @ 07:14 PM CDT

@billy - Good question. I thought about a theme or genre focus, but not sure I really like that. On the other hand, not many would want to have a CD with club music, rock, and folk. Or would they?

  Thu, Apr 10, 2008 @ 08:01 PM CDT

two different approaches...one is a sampler, although I have always found sampler that mix very different genres to be ultimately dissatisfying..I end up liking only a part of what's there. If this was a one shot CD then I think a "Best of Kompoz" collection covering all genre would make sense, but if we're planning more than one, I think a collection of tracks within a couple of related genre would be more attractive. but which genre? And which songs? Are you open for bribery? NOT that I would EVER THINK of doing that....I am JUST KIDDING EVERYONE...can't be too careful anymore.

Billy we don't take you seriously anymore ;)

And Raf I thought more about the series names.

Distant Digital Sketches Vol I
Distant Digital Images Vol II
Distant Digital Visions Vol III

Suggestions of course :)

I've found some multi-genre collections to be killer. Personally I miss the days of 60's radio when you would hear the ventures, the troggs, van morrison, deep purple, neil diamond, burt bacharach and the who in a set.

If it were me I think I would want it to be a typical album where theres some fast and fun and theres some deep and contemplative. I guess the ramones sold a lot of records that were all fast and idiotic, so I suppose that approach could be done.

But I like the idea of a compilation that virtually anybody would hear at least 2 songs that they absolutely love. The guy that can't stand speed metal would just need to punch the next button once or twice, as would the guy that can't stand twangy country, as would the guy that can't stand hip hop.

Ooooh! "Planetary Digital Revolution - Uprising 1" sounds good too. That's what Kompoz is all about. But I like the "Sketches, Images, Visions" concept too.

Picking the songs for the first CD will be challenging. There is so much to choose from. Billy, bribes are not accepted, but nominations are. If you guys would, please PM me with the songs you'd like to hear on the first (or second, third, etc.) CD.

I think a double album is due. There is enough good music here to fill it.

MG
  Sat, Apr 12, 2008 @ 08:08 AM CDT

While we do have enough to fill a double album wouldn't that defeat the multi-volume concept? Also if we are thinking of "sales" at all, a double album by a group of unknown artists is not a mover IMHO. As is a double album by a POPULAR artist is a tough sell.

  Sat, Apr 12, 2008 @ 04:53 PM CDT

I don't think album means what it used to either. iTunes has changed the habits of buyers. They buy a song at a time. So, a double album could be offered at the price of a regular album as an incentive to buy the whole thing.
If any one artist receives more than $50 bucks from this venture, I would be very surprised. And thats not a big deal. However, the resulting exposure could be big. Things that appear in places like iTunes, tend to show up at peer-to-peer downloading sites. Thats a good thing if you ask me.
Hearing a song created by the members here playing as the credits roll in a major movie is not such a far-fetched outcome. It all begins with exposure.

Here's a few cents (maybe three)

I offer up "What's the Big Idea?" for an album title. Kind of hints at promise and failure at the same time.

I also like the title "All over the Map" which covers the different genres this album would contain and Kompoz.com membership as well.

Digital Sketching Visions, etc. all sound a bit too New Age-ey for my taste, but I suppose it doesn't make a terrible amount of difference. "Kompoz" is the keyword since that's the name of the band.

Yeah, money? My vote is put it back into your ad budget if you actually make anything. I'm betting this will be a zero sum game at best. The idea is worth it's weight in advertising gold. I say at the least this is sort of a vaulting pole legitimizing the site. Now when you tell your friend you've been Kompozing, you can them somewhere like Amazon to see there's an end result. Doesn't really matter at that point weather they buy. They'll head over to Kompoz and Raf's advertisers get more bang for the buck. I've rambled enough. Cheers!

You guys are all too huggy for me. I fear this might end up "Distant Images of Global Warmth Sketchings with Vision (Hugs and Kisses, Love Raf)... Volume I".
I keep waiting for Breathtax to chime in with a title like "Kompoz: !@#$ Humanity". Where is he when you need him?

Keep in mind, there might be death metal on this album.

Cheers!

undertitle: "A Collection Of International Riff Raf"?

I think one question that many people have, but no one is asking (unless I missed it) is: how does the royalty thing work? who gets what of the 3 dollar 75 that I expect any song of mine to generate if it is included (my mother has promised to buy)?

The royalties will work just like any other traditional music royalties. Each contributor (artist) will get his/her share. That's the part that is going to take a while to sort out. There's some registration and legal stuff I'll need to make sure is done properly. I'll post the full details soon (after my lawyer tells me what to say).

Since the tracks on the CD won`t be all the same kind, i`ve got a hint ...
a big U.K.A. in the middle
undertitle : Unidentified Kompoz Artists
under-undertitle :Volume 1
A set of paintshopped pictures of the artists on the cover, exterior I mean, inside with black background with stars, a few flying saucers with specific kompoz artists flag on them, and a little bit of grass on the ground, and in the foreground with bright green, some Matrix like font, the titles of the songs and bio of the ideea of creating such a CD... If this isn`t enough, I can think of other things to put on the CD cover, but I`ll need some time of course :)

As Momma always said, "Those Romanians are just plain Krazy!"

With a name like Titi how could Mr. Attila NOT be our artist?

Hey Raf, how about setting up a project of this project? Then folks could upload album art and use the 'Talk about it' for suggestions on songs, ideas, blah, blah.

EDIT: I also forgot to mention that an American slang phrase like "You're all over the map" might have some of our non-US folks scratching their heads. Anyway, I can't buy a Citroen over here for that same reason. Lost in translation...I digress....

Well, all I need for starting the project, is the main size of the cover. The specs of the size that Raf wants to use. Will try my best for this project :)

L.E. :
@Rick Thanks for the compliments :) I`m half hungarian, my father is hungarian. But that doesn`t matter, art, inspiration and imagination comes with along with a sick mind :)) Not all Romanians are as krazy as thought.

@Lonnie. I`ll try to do my best in my free time, but I`m kinda busy with my school now, here come the last months of school, and ready to go further to faculty, study hard and a lot of acting classes fill up my schedule. Hope to get it done this weekend. Until then...
