Kompoz Collaboration Contest with Rudy Sarzo!
Tue, Nov 18, 2008 06:11 PM CST - Byraf
Kompozers: Get ready to rock! To celebrate his new book, Off the Rails: Aboard the Crazy Train in the Blizzard of Ozz, legendary rock bassist Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake, Quiet Riot, DIO, Blue Oyster Cult) is launching a Kompoz contest for both musicians and music enthusiasts.
Create a brand new song with Rudy. He'll play bass, you do the rest. Best new song will be featured on RudySarzo.com and Kompoz, and all collaborators from the top three songs will win huge HUGE prizes... and we're talking some totally kick-butt prizes! Top prizes include a Jackson Randy Rhoads guitar, a Peavey Rudy Sarzo signature bass, an Ampeg Amp, an M-Audio Pro Tools rig, Sony Acid Pro, and tons more.
How It Works
Download Rudy's bass riffs and grooves from the contest page. We've packaged up a select Kompoz collection from his Rudy Sarzo Workingman's Loop Library. Next, get busy! Create a project on Kompoz and start collaborating with other members. Create a new original composition with Rudy on bass (at least 75% of the bass track must include Rudy), then submit your project on our contest page.
Judging
All qualified projects will be submitted to a special "Off The Rails" channel on OurStage.com on January 1st. The songs will be promoted and judged by you, by your friends, and by the OurStage community during the entire month of January. The top songs will win, and all collaborators on the final mixes of those songs will win prizes.
Prizes
First off, the winning song will be promoted on Rudy's website and Kompoz. As if that were not enough -- oh man, get this! -- our sponsors, including Sony Creative Software, Jackson Guitars, Peavey, Ampeg, Line 6, M-Audio, Premier Guitar Magazine, OurStage.com, TooSmart! Publishing, and PrintMusicOnline.com, have contributed treasures!
Here's how we're going to award the prizes. We have four prize packages to give away: A Grand Prize Package, a People's Choice Package, a 2nd Place Runner Up Package, and a 3rd Place Runner Up Package.
The Grand PrizePackage currently includes a Peavey Bass Guitar valued at over $2,000, a Jackson Randy Rhoads Guitar valued at over $1,700, an Ampeg Amp, Sony ACID Pro 7, Rudy Sarzo Workingman's Bass Loop Library, Autographed "Off the Rails: Aboard the Crazy Train in the Blizzard of Ozz" book, an Autographed Rudy Sarzo photo, and Kompoz "All Over The Map" CDs.
Rudy Sarzo will personally select the Grand Prize song from the contest submissions, and all of the collaborators that participated in the final mix for that song will be eligible for the prizes in the Grand Prize package, as follows. We'll randomly select via lottery a collaborator from that team. That member will have his/her choice of a prize from the package. We'll then randomly select via lottery a second member from that team, and that member will have his/her choice from the remaining prizes in that package. Prizes will be awarded in this way until all of the prizes in the package are claimed. If there are more prizes in the package than there are collaborators in the winning song, then the names will be re-entered into the drawing and a new round of drawings will be made.
The People's Choice Package will be awarded to the first-place winner of the OurStage voting round. That package currently includes an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R, Protools M-Powered 7.4, Line 6 Pocket POD, Rudy Sarzo Workingman's Bass Loop Library, Autographed "Off the Rails: Aboard the Crazy Train in the Blizzard of Ozz" book, an Autographed Rudy Sarzo photo, and Kompoz "All Over The Map" CDs. Prizes will be awarded in the same fashion, using a lottery system as described above, which will include all collaborators on the final mix of the OurStage winner.
The 2nd and 3rd Place Runner Ups will win: Sony ACID Music Studio, Rudy Sarzo Workingman's Bass Loop Library, Autographed "Off the Rails: Aboard the Crazy Train in the Blizzard of Ozz" book, an Autographed Rudy Sarzo photo, and Kompoz "All Over The Map" CDs.
We will also be awarding prizes to the fan that refers the most new members to Kompoz during the contest period. The Mega Fan Winner will win: Randy Rhoads Guitar Jewelry Pack, Learn To Play Series DVD/Book Combo, Sony ACID Music Studio, Rudy Sarzo Workingman's Bass Loop Library, Autographed "Off the Rails: Aboard the Crazy Train in the Blizzard of Ozz", and an autographed Rudy Sarzo photo.
BTW: Today is Rudy's Birthday! Drop him a birthday greeting here or on his Facebook Profile.

Raf,
I am confused as to the significance of this part:
"For the avoidance of doubt, you acknowledge and agree that the bass loops made available by Rudy Sarzo are royalty free."
Can you explain a bit more?

It just means you can use Rudy's bass loops in anyway you want with no cost... pretty sweet!

Scott, thats what I would think too but I am not sure why we need to agree to that. That is something for him to promise us isn't it? (Via some sort of license perhaps? Like cc BY?)
Raf?

It's language that's probably not needed. You're right, you don't need to agree to that. It's more informational -- that you can use the loops royalty free. However, only for this contest. You can't use the loops for other work unless you buy the loop library. I'll get the rules updated. Thanks Drew.

Raf,
thanks for the response and sorry I am still a bit confused...
...so, you can't really use them royalty free then? Or can you? This might need sorting.
You have to release cc BY-NC-SA right?
"you agree to license that material to the rest of the world under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike 3.0 license"
Are you also restricted from using any other license in addition to that one?
Would it be royalty free to you should you perform your work out somewhere for pay? It would kind of have to for it to be royalty free at all right?
I think that this may still be confusing enough as to benefit from a clearer explanation. ???

1. Sony sells the loops. When you buy a loop library, you get to use them royalty-free for any songs you produce. That's part of the Sony terms and conditions.
2. Sony and Rudy provided us with a subset of the loops from Rudy's Workingman's Loop Library for use on this contest. You can use them for free to create a song for this contest, and the song you produce can be shared, distributed, etc. with Rudy's loops royalty-free. Buy, since you didn't buy the loops, you should not be using the loops for other projects. You should buy the library if you intend to do so.
Does that make sense? It's tough getting the "spirit of the message" across in rules. I need to clarify that better. Hope this helps!

"Buy, since you didn't buy the loops, you should not be using the loops for other projects."
That part is clear.
What is unclear is if you can release the stuff you make for this project under the specified license and other licenses you may choose.
I think the answer sort of has to be yes, but I don't want to assume that.
Sorry if I am being dense here. I am trying my best to get the terms.

Anyone call me when you are ready for some singin!!
I once bought a small mixing board from Rudy. I didn't immediately recognize his name and drove out to his house in Southern California to pick it up. I'm like...whoa, this is a nice neighborhood. What's with the all the gold records on the walls? Then it dawned on me.
I've since outgrown and sold the mixer, but it made for a pretty cool story.
