Rock Your Profile Tue, Nov 11, 2008 06:30 AM CST - Byraf
Today is apparently Pimp Your Profile Day here at Kompoz. In my earlier post, I showed you how to showcase your best collabs on your Kompoz profile. In this post, I'll show you how to add some color and style to your page.
MySpace users have been tricking out their profiles for a long time. They do so by embedding style sheet codes in their About Me or other fields, essentially getting around the system. It's become accepted and standard to do it that way on MySpace. And a few of you have done the same here on Kompoz, by embedding style sheet information in your profile's Status field. The problem with that approach is that the Kompoz Status field gets reset every couple of weeks in order to keep your status from getting stale. The approach aslo requires you to include the correct HTML [style] tags, which can be a pain.
So we've added a new field to your profile page specifically designed for you to include style sheet information. Go to your profile and click the Edit Profile link next to your photo. At the very bottom of the page you'll see the new input box titled "CSS Tags".
While I can't provide a complete tutorial on using CSS style sheets, here is a simple example of the code I added to my profile to make the background black, and to include the Les Paul photo in the background. Take a look at my profile to see the results.
body { background: url(http://www.kompoz.com/media/uploads/media-bin/m1006-20081110-220330-p0.jpg) top left no-repeat #000000; }
In the example above, notice that I provide a URL to an image that will be used for a background. I also tell the browser to display the image in the top left corner, and not to repeat the image if it does not fill the entire browser. Finally, I also tell it to use color #000000 (which is black) as the background color.
Have fun with this, and if you do pimp your profile, post a comment here so we can all see your art. NOTE: If you use any of the sites on the Web for creating these CSS tags, be sure to remove the [style][/style] tags from the code before adding to your Kompoz profile.

Question for the members: What do you think about adding the same capability for projects?

Raf,
I think it would be wonderful. I think anytime you give someone the chance to personalize their page, it gives them the opportunity to express themselves. I think it is wonderful that you are giving us the ability to do so. There are plenty here that don't really care what their page looks like, but I for one love to show my personality in my pages.. so.. I say YES! And Thank You!

that sounds like a good idea - it'd be nice to have a bit more room at the top and bottom though; for any photos (like the Les Paul in your profile). is there any way that when you upload the album artwork it could build it into some CSS script so you get the chosen art as a kind of unobtrusive background/ colour choice.
some of those myspace pages are a bit much though - I can't read the writing because of the choice of background.

Cool! Had to rethink me myspace code experience... Finely got something tangible!

ha ha jason thats fuckin brilliant. it takes the piss but its fun.
did you know you can shorten links to kompoz.com/6707 etc. ?
raf, is it worth considering an auto link creator? - i think its probably better to stick with the album art setup you have already - perhaps with the facility to add colour and patterns to the background as long as it doesn't slow the site down. it can take a little while to load as it is - you must have a shitload of bandwidth though :)
- Axgrinder, how the hell did you get those spinning guitars in your profile, is it an animated gif?

Yay! I'm pretty good at finding myspace layouts :) I tried some here though and they came out looking a little weird - so I'll have to play around with it more when I have time.
Got the featured Collaboration playlist thing up though!
Great Ideas Raf

Yeah, it doesn't work very well with pre-made layouts. And it seems difficult to control your background image. I spent hours playing last night only to just give up. I think I will just put something mundane in and call it good. lmao
