Have been playing folk and blues for 35 years. My music is shaped by my personal life history, which has taken in a broad swath of experiences – from working in a paper mill, to living rough in a one-room cabin with no amenities, leading a small corporation as CEO, and participating in numerous political actions. All of my experience has confirmed and strengthened my perspective as a Marxist and advocate for social justice.
Early influences included Bob Dylan, John Prine, The Band, James and Livingston Taylor, Mississippi John Hurt, Elizabeth Cotton, and John Fahey. During recent years interest has been focused on delta blues music, particularly Robert Johnson, Lightnin' Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters and, more recently, R. L. Burnside and Tab Benoit.
Have been playing in bars, coffee houses, restaurants, brew pubs and wineries around the Finger Lakes region of New York State. Although I have written instrumental pieces all my life, it is only during the last few years that I've begun to compose lyrical pieces. Took the stage name “David Graybeard” after meeting Jane Goodall, where she christened me with the name of one of her chimps – for obvious reasons, if you're looking at my photo.
