Turn Your iPod Into A Powerful Field Recorder With Alesis ProTrack Fri, May 29, 2009 11:30 AM CDT - Byraf
Last year I bought a Zoom H4 for portable field recording and even some home studio recording. I still love this device, but I just learned of another option that has me squirming to break out my credit card. Like the Zoom, the Alesis ProTrack is a handheld digital recorder with a built in X/Y stereo mic pair, XLR and 1/4 inch inputs, and more. But unlike the Zoom, which is a complete standalone recording device, the Alesis uses your iPod for storage.
The ProTrack extends the iPod by adding a shell with an X/Y stereo mic pair -- one that looks quite a lot like the Zoom H4 mics -- and even has onboard XLR jacks and phantom power. You also get LED monitoring, a limiter, additional power (four AAA’s), a mic stand mount -- basically, it turns your iPhone into a real mobile recorder.
While not officially stated on the Alesis website, word is that the iPhone 3G is also supported. Amazon lists the ProTrack for $179. Now, where's my credit card?

They do show a picture of it using a Touch which is the same dimensions. However you also need to buy a $5.00 app to use it with the recorder. Also I think the new updated 4 track app and a decent mic would outperform this. However if I just had an ipod I would scoop this up at that price.

I know a few people who just love the H4. I personally haven't tried it. I like Alesis products but, I am curious as to how something so small can record so well.
