In Well temperaments, each of the 12 major and 12 minor keys was thought to have its own emotional quality. This is primarily due to the varying sizes of the major thirds in the Well temperaments, which dominated European music during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The descriptions below are arranged according to the circle of fifths. You can see that the descriptions change from more peaceful around C major / A minor to more struggling/distressed around F# major / D# minor.

And this brought Schoenberg to atonalism in order to encompass all emotions simultaneously!

This is probably due to the fact that in the well-tempered system, stringed instruments were tuned around C and its overtones. The farther from C in the circle of fifths, the worse the clash in overtones. In today's equal temperament, the difference between different keys is negligible. Fascinating stuff.

That's crazy. I played in these keys a bit over the weekend here and paid attention to what I was doing only in THAT key and the descriptions are exactly right.
