Street Bob - Classic   Waves Audio / iLok - UPDATED

***UPDATE*** See the end of the main blog for a positive response from Waves Audio.

Last month I bought a couple of Waves Audios plug-ins. To use the stupid things, the buyer must also purchase and use a USB security device called an iLok ($50).

http://www.pssl.com/images/ProdImage01/500/ILOK-2.jpg

The iLok plugs into your computer's USB port, and through a series of setup steps, the licenses for the software are stored on the iLok device.

The software (in this case the waves plugins) will not work without the iLok device loaded with the license and plugged into your USB port.

So, everything seemed OK, the plugins are cool (if not a bit expensive), but tonight I opened a project that uses the plugins and I get a message stating that the plugins are not active because the license is not authorized. After some troubleshooting, I learn that the $50 iLok device has failed within  40 days of purcahse.

OK, bad hardware, it sucks but it happens.

Waves doesn't give a Sh**. They refer you to the iLok page so you can request authorization to return the device to iLok. OK fine. Caring about customers is a thing of the past anyway. Right?

I follow the steps to request the authorization to return the iLok, but now, I need to pay them another $49 to "transfer the software licenses" to the new replacement device (which will also take up to two weeks JUST TO GET APPROVAL TO RETURN IT, not including the time to receive it, test it and send a new device.

So, here I am about $169 bucks into Waves for two plugins, and $50 into iLok; and I can't use either product without paying extortion of another $49 (without any guarentee that I won't have to do it all again in another month.)

Lessons Learned:

1) Waves Audio must be owned by the same pirates that own iLok.

2) Don't spend any more money with Waves Audio or any other company that uses iLok.

***UPDATE***

I received this message from Waves in response to my complaints and this blog.

"This type of situation (among other reasons) is why we moved away from iLok support in our current Version 9 release.

Since V9 is not iLok based you can update to it  without replacing the iLok etc.   You would only need to be under the

Waves Update Plan to get V9.

Complete details on Waves V9 can be found at http://www.waves.com/content.aspx?id=11997

Hopefully you will update your blog with the current and correct information.

This update to V9 resolves any issues I had with Waves Audio. If anyone uses products from Waves, I recommend that you look into the V9 upgrade!!

Waves plugins are brilliant.

Like so many "other" plugins, it's such a pity they hang off the back of an iLok. Due to a faulty iLok, I lost ALL my licences last year - and despite having iLok's ZDT (zero down time), I practically had to fight with them to get my licences re-instated. When I sent my "faulty" iLok to the US on an authorized RMA, it was done by trackable delivery. My package was almost returned to the UK because there was nobody on-site to take delivery of it. Several attempts to deliver failed. I went nuts at them. Eventually, they re-instated my licences temporarily for 30 days while the mess was being sorted out. I hope iLok are reading this. It doesn't give one confidence in their customer service. All credit to Universal Audio with their UAD2 platform. These guys have got it right in my opinion.

Yeah, that's the thing. The Waves products seem to be very well designed and intuitive. It's too bad because I won't buy any more.

iLok is a GRR. But, their reason to do it is that many studios will have the entire Waves suite available and different mix engineers (from different studios, renting board time, etc) that use the equipment will bring in their iLok device and only use what they've purchased. So, if I'm mastering at a different studio but have a session set up with my Waves plug ins... I can't then use plug-ins I didn't pay for. Doesn't translate well for we home users out there. On a related note, I find guys who have purchased the waves, leave them in the box and download bootleg copies that hack out the need for iLok.

Bad luck man.

This is why most of the time I don't use any software. I usualy work out my pc, I just use the pc for mixing.

I agree with HutsVoid. It is too complicated with all these with the plugins. It is stupid that if you go to a studio you should use only your plugins. If you rent time you rent the studio equipment too. I use DAW only for tracking and mixng on my console with few hardware. Only exception is UAD with their excellent service and immediate response to any problem you face. And exceptional plugins too.

Waves v9 is simplicity in itself, Jeff. It's really neat how you can deposit licences in your own Waves "cloud" for storage for a whole range of reasons. It was the whole iLok thing that stopped my buying more Waves plugins. I hope other plugin developers see the light and let SS iLok slip majestically beneath the waves (pun intended).

I agree. After getting updated and having the licenses sorted, I just finished adding to a project using Waves Bass Rider (and I used the One Knob Louder plugin to sample the mix). I really like their products.

I'm pleased you got that sorted out, Jeff.
I use Bass Rider too, but I put the C4 in front of it. Both work together brilliantly in the mix. Give it a try :o)

Depending on the tone of the bass, of course.... If you want, I can give you my settings for both plugins just as reference to get you started, Jeff.

Same story, more or less. Spent just under $1200 (ouch) on Flux plugins which needed an iLok. iLok begins to lose its licenses in dris and drabs (there are 3 in total) then loses them all as the PC refuses to recognise the device. The ONLY way possible to sort it out is to pay $100 (incl $49 for them to click a mouse and transfer the licenses to a new iLok, which should really be a basic and free duty of a company when they have manufactured a shoddy piece of substandard tat which ceases to work after less than 8 months) plus $50 to Fed Ex me another miniscule USB stick. $50.
But it's the $49 to transfer the license which seems like extortion to me. Can they not be referred to the US Federal Trade Commission? They are clearly exploiting a monopoly position. It's virtually a scam.
