I just purchased a set of Yamaha MSP5 Studio Monitors and i have some questions.

1. What will drive me to use the trim adjustments?

Is it just a matter of trial and error using other sources to check results? (Car stereo, iPod, etc.?)

Or, will the room create the need for trimming?

Maybe both? Or other reasons?

This might be a stupid question, but what's the point of a reference if it is adjustable?

2. Does anyone have experience with these monitors, and can share any insights for care, or other special treatment?

Thanks

I've used the MSP7 monitors for couple years now and for me I just kept adjusting until I found the settings I liked.  Since I use strictly for near field monitoring the trick was finding the "sweet" spot, distance and separation distances for the monitors.  I wound up using these settings.

HI TRIM = +15

LO TRIM = +15

LOW CUT = flat

LEVEL = +6 (max)

Separation between speakers about 36" and distance about 36", mounted on shock absorbing stands.

These are some great sounding monitors, you made a good choice.  I've had a lot of different near fields over the years and they are definitely the best I've found for the money.  I've been very happy with them.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm still relatively new to this stuff. I feel good about the choice of monitors based on a lot of research in the price range, but a bit unsure as to how the trim settings affect the mix.

Ben;

I'll try to get some pics up this weekend. I have a heavy work schedule today and tomorrow.

The room is NOT a studio. It has a treadmill and some other exercise equipment, electronic drums, six basses and a guitar hanging on the wall, and my computer set-up. The walls are plaster and paint.

As far as "worth stealing", I will be selling some basses before moving to China. Depending on your definition of a "steal", they may be worth a look.
