As the title states... I need someone to teach me how to recognize the main key that a song is played on. I can't seem to get this simple thing to stay in my mind. I`ve got some book about that, but I can't seem to keep that in mind, how do the rest of you find out the key that your or other's song is played ?

The basic classic theory is that most of the notes in the piece belong to the scale of the key. E.g., in an A-major song, you're likely to find mostly A, B, C#, D, E, F#, G#. In minor tonality, the thing is a bit more complicate depending on which scale/s is/are being used (melodic, harmonic, etc.). Then, there could be modulations to other keys within the same piece. A common hint is that a lot of songs end with an autentic cadence on the I chord (built on the root note - e.g., many pieces in A major will end with an A major chord). This website is a fairly good reference for basic music theory. This is a more complete one. Hope this was of some help.

First I look on the project page under "Key"  :) (just kidding)
Sadly, my only method is to play along until I find what fits with whatever the chord progression is. Listening to the bass (if there is one) can be helpful. Some songs are easier than others.. blues usually doesn't stray too far, but jazz often is a struggle (I can't play that genre anyway).
When in doubt see Enrico's advice above.

This chart is kind of a rule of thumb to find the key signature of the song. If it has one or more of the chords in a certain row, then the key will be the left-most entry (under Major Keys).

This is just a guideline. Musical genious breaks the rules.

Cheers,

Gord
