I was born into music... My mom and dad were in a blues band together most of my life growing up. My mom sang, played rhythm guitar and wrote most of her own songs. My dad played bass, which I began playing also at the age of around 15. Prior to that, I played clarinet for about 7 years and messed around with guitar for a couple. I also picked up the drums along the way.
I've written songs since childhood, but didn't actually record anything until I was about 16. I had a band with my friends, but spent a lot of time at home writing songs and playing all the instruments and singing. I used a walkman and a boombox in a way that I could make multitrack recordings. When I couldn't borrow time on a friends drumset, I would make drums out of anything I could find around the house.
Over the years, I also used drum machines, which I got very good at programming. Nowadays though, I use an electric kit that I midi into the computer. I can "fake it" on keys for recording by putting together stuff piece by piece and looping. I've been influenced by many, many styles of music, including blues, jazz, pop, rock, reggae, funk, soul, r&b, hip hop, new wave, gospel, classical, ambient, industrial... old skool flavas mainly (just can't get into today's sound... there needs to be some sort of revolution!)
As far as recording and playing all of the instruments, my main influences for that were Prince and Stewart Copeland. I've been writing and recording for years and years, in addition to being in and out of bands. Several years back, I found God and began using the music to serve Him. I started rapping (I'm NOT called to rap, but the message and lyrics were strong and I didn't have anyone else to do them). Nonethless, it was accepted pretty well at the church, and other churches invited me to perform at various functions. I made 2 independent CD's during that time and also alternated playing bass and drums in the church choir for a few years.
At this point, I am interested in collaborating online and have a few different things that I'm working on, including a project called "Truth B Told" with Clarence Ferguson, Jr. Who is also a member of this site.
