Since when did Kompoz become a fileshare service?
Sat, Jan 16, 2010 • 04:01 PM UTC - By no-Zart

Sorry if this topic has already been addressed but I have been noticing a lot of projects that contain commercial music from various artists.  Users such as yang_c, yinhui19870108 and blackhumor are a few of the culprits.  Couldn't such material create a problem for Raf and Kompoz?  I'm pretty sure this is illegal but then again if the folks doing this are really from the country they claim as their "home" then.... well let me stop before I say something politcally incorrect!  Besides I'm sure folks from other countries, probably even the good'ol US of A, have done the same.  It just seems so rampant with.... na let me stop again, sounds like I'm profiling now.

Well I hope Raf is aware of this none the less.

thanks, I added them to my "offender" list. But just out of curiosity, I noticed you collaborated on this one project. Is this an original?

I noticed this too. However, when I went in and looked at the number of plays and downloads, there were few, so I don't know why they are posting here.

imagine you got your hardrive full....what better than a free upload mp3 player site as kompoz?

no-Zart   no-Zart on Sat, Jan 16, 2010 @ 05:31 PM UTC

Maybe that says something about the Kompoz community - good for us! But I still think these projects and maybe even the user accounts should be removed. Tough to police I know, but maybe Raf can comment about any concerns he has about it.

This is something many of us have mentioned in the past, Ralph. The implications for Kompoz are quite worrying. While tracks infringing copyright have been removed and are still being removed to this day, some suspect material will still slip through un noticed. Perhaps Kompoz has reached the point where appointed individuals would have the necessary "rights" to quarantine suspect material quickly until an investigation either clears the material or forces its deletion. Members agree that they will not upload material that infringes copyright by ticking the appropriate box. There's no real excuse for going against that rule. However, any sanctions for breaking the rules would be up to the Kompoz management.

I have noticed this type of material in the past and sent Raf a quik PM about it - POOF! he Zaps'em out.
BUT these recent uploads are getting out of hand - there's been a ton from the 3 no-Zart mentions and a few others.

no-Zart   no-Zart on Sat, Jan 16, 2010 @ 07:35 PM UTC

Ok then hopefully someone will take a look at the member id's and projects that are mentioned above.

It would be a shame for a few to spoil the opportunity for others who like to share their talents or folks like me that enjoy mostly listening to the results of a good collaboration.

I don't know if anyone has PMed Raf about this, so I just did. He may miss it if it is in a blog. Great job both finding these and notifying about them :)

Thanks for the vigilance. Keeping Kompoz "clean" of covers is critical, and I thank you all. I'm zapping away now.

You made me ROTFL with that one! I guess the 90's are coming back! I agree on keeping covers out of Kompoz, if ppl want to do covers that's what YouTube is for.

On the other hand, Kompozing should be about creating stuff. Not about pleasing the musicbiz moguls and Copyright bullies.

I personally don't like to use other people's music, but I don't begrudge anybody else doing it. It seems to me that this would be problematic if the above-listed Kompozers were PROFITING from the use of others' work, but insofar as no one on Kompoz has EVER realized a profit, what exactly is the problem? Let the police (and record companies) worry about infringement; musicians who do so are just procrastinating. This comment is itself a form of procrastination, and so I'll wrap it up and get back to work now.

I guess one day they'll work out they are wasting their time.

But then I been saying that about internet ads and those bastad commercials that pop out at you left and right.

Someone needs to wake these idiot advertisers up - ooh that ad just popped at me for the 12th time - yes I realy must buy that product - NOT.

I think we are the same, when I see blatent self promotion - it's an instant 'back' button.

@ dearest Matt.. Seriously? We should just wait until someone actually files a law suit, puts a cease and desist injunction on Kompoz.. and THEN worry about it? As Sir Thomas Moore so aptly pointed out.. silence IS consent. The fact that no one you KNOW has ALREADY profited has no bearing on the potential trouble that an overly diligent lawyer can cause. The mere potential for others to illegally profit is more than enough ammunition .. the actual profiting does not need to have yet occurred. and that is the problem.
Of course I could be entirely mistaken and maybe there is absolutely no problem with copyright infringement in these cases.. I'll go check with my lawyer.

fUzZ on Sun, Jan 17, 2010 @ 07:19 PM UTC

its just simpler, you should not use kompoz as a mass storage device,to put all the stuff you have just downloaded with Emule, Edonkey or even Elephant

MDK
MDK on Sun, Jan 17, 2010 @ 07:55 PM UTC

Copyright infringement by posting a cover is debateable, since nobody is profiting. Posting an actual copyrighted song in its original form without permission is outright piracy, and a real nuisance for kompoz. Glad to see some of them already deleted.

< BSP >
I believe if you want to cover something, try something in the public domain. There's lots of public stuff ready and waiting for collaboration.

Kompoz might be shut down if it were selling tracks based on copyrighted material--it's not. A tiny fraction of its members are commenting on copyrighted material for cultural, not commercial purposes.

When someone posts copyrighted material on YouTube, they don't shut down YouTube--they remove the material. Talking about this as if it threatens the existence of Kompoz is over-the-top and, frankly, Republican.

And dammit, you've distracted me from working on my new tune: a mash-up of Bjorn and Michael Jackson, which I will post shortly.

kresling on Sun, Jan 17, 2010 @ 08:08 PM UTC

Oh, people are posting commercial tracks for file-sharing and not cultural purposes? I need to read these posts more carefully. Yeah, that should be done elsewhere, I agree. May I suggest my house?

billy
billy on Sun, Jan 17, 2010 @ 08:38 PM UTC

You are right Matt.. they won't shut down Kompoz.. they would just call Raf. He won't mind.
Only a Republican would call these concerns Republican.. and what exactly is the point of having to check the box about owning the copyrights of the material you are about to upload?
Since it doesn't matter.. why even bother with the box? No one will care, and no one will ever notice. If you don't want to play the game.. then go post it on YouTube.

RaulRiera   RaulRiera on Mon, Jan 18, 2010 @ 10:14 AM UTC

Totally agree with Matt.

Defending copyright won't make any of us less of a shark snack in the music biz. 1984 comes to mind just with a sountrack full of covers.

If we do care that much about (C) why are so much peple here doing (CC)?

i have been sending RAF emails for 3 months about the chinese invasion on Kompoz. Glad that NO-ZART posted the Blog. these non-kompozotions interupt my lunch time listens to new projects when i have to hear some china guy post "Endless Love" that i really liked back in the 1980's the 1st 2 million times i heard it! i am glad to see that these will go away. PLEASE DELETE all the China cover tunes too as they have no meaningful value for Kompozers. This is a kollab site, not a pod-cast for Chairman Mao Zedong . ain't gonna listen to him any how. when General McGarther asked for the 26 atomic bombs during the Korean war, They should have given them to him.
I am waiting for the Pakistanies to start posting Taliban orginals!

I dont care about you-tube, i dont collab there and it is not known for music kollaboration. i kollab here. keep the place a kollabration site.

Hey RAF - you missed this one

this song is a current hit on the radio right now

Good 'ol way to solve things! I propose start nuking Kompoz until the supremacy is Konquered :P

May I suggest rcassent as Kompoz' foregin affairs minister so he can free us from the Chinaman-Radio threat!

Someone has made a tidy profit (royalties) from Kompoz. I won't mention any names but it starts with a B, ends with an N and rhymes with Urn ;)

I confess. $21.79, my royalties off All Over The Map. It is an American check which cannot be cashed in Sweden, so I have framed it.
