sanger's Spot Light On.......HifiFrey Tue, Jun 28, 2011 05:09 PM UTC - Bysanger
From Israel to Texas to Chicago.... and now to the streets of SIN CITY!
Las Vegas Baby!
Our next guest joined Kompoz back in December of 2008 and we've been diggin' his work ever since. Who ever said drummers don't write songs, never heard of HifiFrey!!
sanger’s Spot Light on…… Cory Frey
sanger: So, tell me Cory, what first brought you to Kompoz?
Cory: I don't really remember how I found it. I am sure Google had a big part in it. I remember signing up quickly but went 6 months or so before I could contribute. I was in the middle of finishing my studio space converting my garage. Being an acoustic drum player I needed the sound proofed space before I could begin. As you can tell I did indeed finish the studio and have been rocking ever since.
sanger: What’s you favorite thing about Kompoz?
Cory: My favorite thing about Kompoz are the people. We share the common bond of music and creative expression.
sanger: Has Kompoz made you a better drummer/musician/engineer?
Cory: I would say yes as more a musician and engineer. Not so much a better drummer.
sanger: How so?
Cory: I have been playing drums for 30 years now. I have played up and down the Las Vegas Strip many years playing many genre, so drumming skills have mostly been honed for sometime now. I can say that being a member at Kompoz has certainly sharpened my audio engineering skill set and overall musicianship.
sanger: What can you suggest to make Kompoz even better than it is today?
Cory: I would love to see the day when we can comment right on the timeline of a submitted track to detail areas in the song instead of typing it all out in detail. It's such a shame most of this great music being churned out will never be played live. I dream of the day some of us could organize a few concerts per year to push the Kompoz name and to further get this material out there. My vote is here in Vegas at the Mandalay Bay on the House of Blues stage. :) A guys got to have a dream right? hee hee hee...
sanger: Have you had a chance to actually meet any of your fellow Kompozers face-to-face?
Cory: Yes several
sanger: Really? That’s great! Can you tell us more about that?
Cory: I have met Bjorn, Brannon and Eric Bennett [ericlives]... Bjorn and Eric came to Vegas a couple years ago. We hung out over entirely too much beer and cigarettes at the Orleans. Good times! Brannon came for a visit and stayed in my home year ago now on his whirlwind tour of Vegas, Manila and Stockholm. All good people, great minds and kind, tender souls. I'll never forget it. I had my ticket bought for the Stockholm Showdown. I was so looking forward to it. My dad got sick a couple weeks prior to the date, had to go in the hospital. Needless to say I was bummed I could not go and meet more Kompozers.
sanger: I hope you Dad’s doing OK these days. What do your friends/bandmates/family have to say when you tell them about Kompoz?
Cory: My friends dont think much about it unless they are musicians themselves. My bandmates think it is very cool and are Kompoz members as well. My family is excited to hear all the killer music I am a part of.
sanger: Other than your own tunes, do you have a favorite Kompoz Komposition?
Cory: Yes. Several come to mind. “Dinner at Lonnie’s” by Marty [MDK]. I hope to play drums to that one day if Marty and Lonnie will let me. :) “Runner” by Reggie [bouffy] is a favorite. There are so many I could just go on and on.
sanger: What would you like to say about Kompoz that our members can benefit from?
Cory: I would say to the newbies mainly. Dont expect people to clammer to add parts to your songs. The trick to Kompoz is to join other people’s projects when you are new. Once they see how much you care about their music they will then help you with yours. Also making music is a very emotional journey and if you don't have thick skin, you won't enjoy yourself here. Not everyone is going to like your track or song.
sanger: One final question Cory, name two artists you’d like to see for a Kollaboration Kontest?
Cory: I would like to see Dweezil Zappa or Mike Keneally.
Cory, thanks so much for letting me put the Spot Light on YOU

Cory's first appearance on the sight began with a comment to a project of mine that read "prepare for drums." It's my second favorite Cory quote next to "JPFY."

Cory is not only a great drummer, sound engineer, arranger and car mechanic :), he is also a really nice guy and I thoroughly enjoy both trying to keep up with his drumming when we appear on tunes together and trying to keep up with his beer consumption :). A very well deserved spotlight on one of the (if not _the_) best drummers I have ever had the pleasure to work with. Here's to many more! :)

If there were a position for "Legendary Nevada Guy", Cory would be it. He's exceeded my expectations every time he contributes to my projects. I'm wondering if Bjorn could make him an honorary Swede too. Something like Halvard-Cory...

But its Nevadan, not Spanish.
What do they call people from Las Vegas anyway? The Vegans? It hardly fits. I have seen Cory eat and that mofo aint no vegan.

Cory is the best! He introduced me to Kompoz! While I have been very busy lately, I hope to get back into the swing of being a part of many more great tunes. Not to brag, guys, but I must be the luckiest Kompozer there is... I get to play with Cory on stage! He truly is a monster player!

@ Cory,
Sounds great but we are playing at "Choices Pub" the same night, but I know right where you are as I've played LVCS several times just upstairs.
What is the band you play with here?
Cheers

Cool I have played Choices many times and even more when it was Spankys. The bands name is Nasty Habits. The owners of Choices is a fruit loop. He wanted to blame me and the band for doing some damage to his plexiglass drum shield.
There were some other issues but I doubt we will be back to Choices. What a shame.
Would love to check out the band sometime. Keep me in the loop on your gigs.

Thanks Brannon! That was the second or third time we had played 'Give it All' live. It gets a pretty good response from the crowd (and that's when we tell them that it's one of ours....)
Cory, here's to many, many more years of rock and roll domination, brother!
