Kompoz Labs: A Peek at Our New Audio Player Wed, Aug 17, 2011 02:33 AM UTC - Byraf
We've been working on a new Kompoz track audio player. It's not quite finished yet, but it's getting pretty close. And we'd like for you guys to have a look.
The new audio player will be the central focus of the track details page. You'll be able to click on any part of the audio waveform, and jump to any part of the track visually. The playhead will move over the waveform as the track sound plays. And as you move your mouse over the player, it will show you the playback time under your mouse.
You can try it now. Just add "&beta=true" to any track URL. For example:
You'll also see a "share" button on the player itself, so that you can easily embed your tracks in other sites.
We'll be rolling this out soon to all track pages, but we still have some work to do. Specifically, we'll be adding buttons so that listeners to get information on the project and track owner. And sometime this quarter, we'll be adding a feature so that you can drop markers and/or comments at specific points along the timeline.
Tell us what you think.

I can finally point out where Brannon slurps his coffee in the middle of the song!
Hmmm ... drop the player into the comments of an idea track and point to a spot and say "what do you think about noseflute right HERE?".... hmmmmm

Raf, thanks for this great upgrade! What's the word I'm looking for?...awesome, marvelous, spectacular, splendid? Nah. One word does not do it justice. I'm just gonna call it Komtastic-Pozalicious-Sangertation-Rafamundo!...and fantastic.

A massive improvement and it'll be another great feature of the site.
If it did have the 'marker' & 'comments' functions it would be up with the BEST type of imbedded player out there.
I do have some idea of how much extra work that would be and think your programming is amazing, but it would save you going back to it in 1yr - 18months when every other competitor site has that level of functionality.

I like this quite a bit - this will really enhance commenting on tracks as projects progress.
Some initial feedback:
I like the compressed view with the "more" link to expand - I love anything that saves me from having to scroll.
One thing I noticed was that I had to hit play before I would see the track playback time and could click on the track to jump to a point in the song. I could hit play, then pause, and anytime after that initial play, see the playback time and jump around, but not before an initial play. Even after hitting stop, this worked. It might be nice to make that available before having to play, esp when you have comments and people want to jump right to a point in the tune.
Personally, I prefer dropdown option lists to buttons in a GUI as it makes it less cluttered, so the replacement of the "Track" dropdown with buttons isn't my favorite, but that's just my opinion. :)
For the futures list, it would also be a nice feature to be able to click/drag the mouse over the track like you can when you go into solo mode on a track in logic, say - sorta like moving the tape across the playback head (oh my, well, that dates me...) so you can find a specific spot easily. I suppose that's a lot more work than is necessary, but I tried it and figured I'd mention it.

"hey Bill, what time is it?"
Bill: "Well, the word clock (from the Latin word clocca, "bell"), which gradually supersedes "horologe", suggests that it was the sound of bells which also characterized the prototype mechanical clocks that appeared during the 13th century in Europe.... blah, blah, blah....."

@RollingThunder, who said
"...One thing I noticed was that I had to hit play before I would see the track playback time and could click on the track to jump to a point in the song..."
There's a reason for that. It's mainly a technical issue with the fact that the player does not know the audio length (time) until it has loaded it. And I don't attempt to pre-load the audio when the page is first loaded, because that would potentially chew up bandwidth (which means $$$). In fact, with MP3s, the player does not know the exact length (time) of the track until it's 100% loaded (although it does a good job of estimating it once the buffering has started).
One way around this is for the system to determine the actual audio length once, and then storing that value. I can potentially do this when the track is first loaded. I will look into this as a solution.

Ah - yep: I see that the loading bar status doesn't progress on page load - only on hitting play. Makes sense - and yeah, auto downloading for the page load isn't sensible.

I think if it could autotune me, snap me to a humanized grid and make a cappuchino, it will be the pinnacle of the Kollaboration Evolution. Don't implement those please :)

@Brannon - New uploads should all be blue. Uploads before yesterday will remain green. There should not be any grey, expect for the ones lost during the hard drive fail (they will be recovered soon).
@Matt - top-of-the-page player will be replaced eventually.
@leesharp - Repeat button is very do-able.
Thanks everyone!

@Brannon -- Yep, all the old waveforms pre-crash are missing, so it shows the generic kompoz logo. We are still working with the data recovery firm, and hope to get all those old waveforms back. If not, then we'll regenerate them (something that we're trying to avoid!)
