Hi guys, Great song you have here! I was bored today and started playing around with a mix in the hope of improving my metal mixing skillz :P Sri's mix is great so no hard feelings if you don't like this one :) Any feedback is much appreciated though! :) PS: Would be great to have the drum seps + a guitar DI if you have it!
Heya - I'll have to listen later on, but to be honest I don't like giving guitar DI's out. I've done so and it's always been a nightmare. I like the sound I have, prefer the sound I have and most "engineers" just rape the tone by using eq or compressors on it. :D Just me, and I'm not saying you would, but having gone there I don't anymore - no way I want anyone reamping my guitar.
Yeah I totally get that! I also don't like to do that for exactly the same reason ;) I like the sound but there was just some places where it sounded like a fade in (maybe a noise gate disengaging?) instead of the attack of the pick.
could also be my sloppy playing. :D this was about as fast as I can chug in this style, lol. I'm uploading updated rhythm seps in a moment.
Thanks! No, your playing is great! It's just some fade in stuff that's going on ;)
I am gating the shit outta the rhythm tracks to be fair - really had to to keep some clarity there. But I can hear places where the picking could have been better, lol.
Nice mix, Jannik! Since I always plan on mixing stuff I write I often forget to update stuff: I adjusted the very end of the guitars to have a longer hold. You have the keys up much more than I do obviously - I gotta think about that. I generally use the keys as "body" and texture, but this is making me think about it, lol. I kinda dig it. On the vocals - since they were already processed with verb and some light delay, I didn't add anything like that to them other than a touch of tight delay on the lead. It sounds like you are using mv2 or something on the vocal bus and that is really pulling the verb etc up. On the vocal "world gets" on the lead track, I snipped that out, doubled it and used vocal synth to match the sound of "cold" on the backing track so it was a bit more consistent, then blended the orig back as a double to fill it out. Since Volker had put time into the vocal production, I didn't try and mess with that, and also sort of liked the panned delay he had on "cold" It was a nice effect. I do lose JeanLui's bass in this, to be honest - it's killer bass and I like prominent bass to fill out the bottom end of things. It is a very tight mix, but missing bottom end between the bass and drums, to me.
Thanks for the feedback! :) Yeah I had a really hard time balancing the kick and bass and I guess I ended up with the worst of both worlds instead of the other way around :P I'll take another look at the song tomorrow when I have fresh ears. What's a mv2? I did put some extra effects on the vocals because I wanted them to be in some of the same space as the rest of the instruments. But it's hard to find a balance between the baked in stuff and what I want to do. Vocal synth - is that a thing? What plugin are you using for that? :)
mv2 is a waves plug that is sorta like a compander, and vocal synth is a plug by izotope that basically wreaks havoc with vocals, lol, but it has some fx that are useful and I got it in a bundle. So if you want a death metal sorta grol you can kinda get that outta it, for example. One of my uploads appears to be stuck in the transcoder - once it lets me I'll restart it.
