Creative Brief

This is a spin-off of a soulful track created by Lawman. The lyrics are below, and I sang it as a demo of how they fit the music.

The Place Where I Grew Up?

Is this the place

where I grew up?

I’m back for a visit

After many years

Makes me wanna cry

Cry some painful tears

Chorus:

For these streets

These empty streets

Of this old town

Of my hometown

People used to hustle

People used to bustle

Now you can’t even

Hear the slightest rustle

Can this be the place ….

Where I grew up?

Where I grew up?

Is this where I used to live?

Is that the old corner store?

It had a brightly colored door

My mama used to say

We’re outta milk

Go get some more

I’d run down to the corner

With some money in my hand

I’d grab the milk and give the money

To the corner store man

Now the door is gone

And the place is boarded up

There’s no milk anymore,

not even a cup

And the parking lot

Is busted up concrete

The whole neighborhood

Just feels incomplete

Don’t you know

This place used to have a vibe

People walkin’, people talkin’

This place was alive

Chorus:

Yes, these streets

These empty streets

Of this old town

Of my hometown

People used to hustle

People used to bustle

Now you can’t even

Hear the slightest rustle

Can this be the place ….

Where I grew up?

Where I grew up?

Right over there

I made my first dollar

Then I kissed my first girl

Right behind her collar

I used to play football

in that empty lot

But last I heard,

That’s where someone got shot

People were all around

Just livin’ their lives

But the money dried up

And business took a dive

Then the families left

Those that could

Most of those who stayed

Are up to no good

The people have dispersed

I guess I did too

Now the place is cursed

A ghost town through and through

Chorus:

Yes, these streets

These empty streets

Of this old town

Of my hometown

People used to hustle

People used to bustle

Now you can’t even

Hear the slightest rustle

Can this be the place ….

Where I grew up?

Where I grew up?

From Lawman: Just a progression I have been playing with looking to see where we can take it!

Verse:  Bm - F#m - Em - G - A
