I decided to have another go at mastering this to try and wring some more clarity out of a very difficult mix.

I'll never tire of this. :D I'm wondering though. It feels like it's pushed just a bit too much here. I'm not sure if it's the mp3 encoding or not but there's a definite distortion starting at 50 seconds. I'm not a mastering person by any means but I'm not so sure it needs to be pushed quite this much. It peaks at zero very quickly. I can't see the waveform obviously but I can imagine it. If it was me, and it's certainly not for me to say, I'd not go for clarity so much as for smooth depth and dynamics. I actually like the sense of really listening for the subtleties and details. if that makes sense. It feels harsh. Now, nothing could make this track sound bad ever so this is just me nitpicking but that is what I hear in my phones. :)

Hiya Jenny! You're dead right. Listening on different devices, it's too harsh, and I can now hear some crackling as if it's playing on vinyl! I'll try again, roll it back a little more and go for that smoothness you're talking about. Or maybe, an engineer from Abbey Road will offer to take it off my hands and fix all the problems I created and make it sound like it should to do justice to you and all the other great singers on it! Ah well, maybe that's unlikely, so I'll stumble along best I can :(

Hahaha, you're doing great IMHO. I dunno, I just know that perfection will eventually bite us in the arse one way or another. I think this is a tricky beast and should be handled as such; with plyers, leather apron, and protective goggles. It will take over your mind and life, and contaminate every deeply rooted confidence with chainsaws of doubt. Don't let it get ya. Beat it off with a stick if you have to. Always carry a flame thrower and many powerful drugs to combat the demons arising from such a struggle between impulse and knowledge.

Awesome job, Richard. I don't even want to imagine my DAW filled with so many tracks... Let's just say the crackling is on purpose to make it sound like from the 70's or so ;-) Looking forward for the next mix. Maybe you can do one with the new drum-track from IEST drummer too.

What? wait - there's another drum track ? I have been AWOL for far too long from Kompoz and seriously lost track of things. (good tip on the crackling - like it!)
