Hi. This is my strings proposal. I've used smaller, more intimate string sections with respect to what I used in other songs with Ray. I thought this song needed such a more delicate approach, also considering the other instrumentation, thus I avoided the "huge" sound I used elsewhere. There are also some fist chairs solos here and there. I've also added some library drums and bass to have a more complete backing track on which I could work. Of course Danny can use them until real players join -- in case let me know and I'll upload the seps. Concerning the strings, let me know if you like them; if so, I'll upload their sep track. Finally, the mix is very rough and basic, not mixed at all actually, just some levels done with an equalizer and a compressor on the mix bus, that's all. I've done nothing on the vocals but equalizing them to cut some nose tone and a little compression, plus some plate verb, but vocals levels are all to be done yet. Because Ray is quite in a hurry -- he needs a mix before March 10 to present it in a gathering -- there are two options: 1) I prepare a mix; 2) Danny prepares a mix. My free time is going to be very scarce and sporadic from the day after tomorrow on, at least till March 12, thus I cannot tell for sure I'll have time enough to prepare a "good" mix in time, but in case option 1 is chosen I'll try and make a mix which is at least somewhat better than this demo. Let me know.

Ah, let me add a couple of notes. First, in the last chorus I made the violins play the melody that is sung in the first chorus (and maybe they should play it a tad louder, something I'll check and fix before the upload). I don't fully like that solution, it was just a way to fill a part that otherwise sounded empty because there are no vocals there. I think a better solution would be having a solo of some other instrument, e.g. a guitar. In that case, I could put also in the last chorus the same strings parts that are played in the first two choruses. Second, in the final bar or so of each chorus, the vocals sing some off scale notes. It's not fully disturbing, I think it can be OK; however, I find it's a bit more disturbing when the melody is played by violins in the last chorus (see previous point). I've tried a trade off solution by minimizing the number of clashing notes, but it's not the ideal way to deal with that. Again, a solo played by another instrument there would be better.

Enrico, that is positively fabulous! The strings are well-separated and highly individual in the mix (everything I come up with sounds like simple chords on a keyboard, which they are, lol!). The arrangement is deeply expressive, and creates a new character in what is a simple piano melody. I'd considered your remarks about an additional solo instrument, and I think I will try something with my new Ovation acoustic. Not so much a solo as a counterpoint and response to the vocals. Concerning mixing this, I'm liking what you accomplished with this particular upload, and I certainly have no issues with you doing the mix. The drums were flawless, and the bass was present without overpowering the other instruments. I'd try to separate Ray's vocals a little more. One technique I was thinking of was to have his dry vocal in the center, and then clone that track to two tracks, panned left-only and right-only. On each of those I would use a different reverb (say left plate, and right cathedral) with the mix @ 90% effect and 10% dry vocal. Or even a simple ambient reverb on each track, but with different eq values to affect the blend. The idea is to add emphasis to his words without necessarily raising the volume, overall. I would like a sep of your strings, however, mixed just as they are now. I've always liked to keep instrumental versions of the songs I work on, in the event that later new lyrics are thought of, or perhaps a different vocalist wants to try the song. If you end up doing the final mix, you could always do two mixes, one with vocals and the other without, and achieve the same purpose. -Danny

Hi Danny, glad you liked it! Because you want to try that guitar solo in the final chorus, shall I replace in it the strings as they are in the other two choruses? Once I know that, I'll apply the change and upload the strings sep. Possibly this evening or tomorrow if this evening I'm busy. Do you want also the bass and drums seps? Ah, and I'm fine if you take care of the mix -- as said my free time is going to be very poor.

I'm uploading a mix now, Enrico. I worked against the current string arrangement in that section, and YES I'd love to have the bass and drums seps as well :-)
