PER SIMON
Peace walls are physical structures used as a last resort to separate people who are in conflict. However, I think the term can also be used as a metaphor for any constructs that contribute towards the separation and segregation of people. I'm open to suggestions for genre but my initial thoughts were that it could be Bruce Springsteen type territory ...
Peace wall
(Intro)
Ragged city
graffiti on a wall,
barbed wire hearts
ensnare us all.
Two kids kicking cans
separated just by chance,
dirt engrained under fingernails
in this embittered land.
(Chorus)
Yeah, I think it would be nice
if I could knock down your peace wall,
it would be really nice (really nice)
if these barriers could fall.
(Verse 1)
We don't have to build with bricks
when we could build our friendship tall,
you don't have to hide your face
just let me bring down your peace wall.
(Verse 2)
There may be fighting in the streets
but we don't have to heed the battle call,
I don't march under a flag
let's tear down that peace wall.
(Bridge)
Monstrous spaces
where the silence stretches,
plots marked out
with wilting flowers round the edges.
Grieving mothers
with faces running,
Jesus on a cross
but God's not coming.
(Chorus)
Yeah, I think it would be nice
if I could knock down your peace wall,
it would be really nice (really nice)
if these barriers could fall.
(Verse 1 repeated)
We don't have to build with bricks
when we could build our friendship tall,
you don't have to hide your face
just let me bring down your peace wall.
(Verse 2 repeated)
There may be fighting in the streets
but we don't have to heed the battle call,
I don't march under a flag
let's tear down that peace wall.
(Outro)
Barbed wire hearts
Let roses bloom amongst the thorns,
Hands reached out
One day this shall be the norm,
When our children walk
With no allegiance to a cause,
Skipping past crumbling relics
Knowing nothing of our wars
