Creative Brief

Brexit in the UK, Trump in the US , the possibility of Le Pen rising to power in France - there has been an unmistakable lurch to the right in politics across the Western world. Trying to understand why is fertile ground for writers and was the inspiration for this song.

Note: For the chorus bits in bold, I had in mind that they could be sang as a choir, maybe in a gospel choir style?

Vocal added by my lovely wife. :)

Rust belts

 (Verse 1)
Tragic outcomes
I'm trying to understand,
The destructive uprisings
That are sweeping our lands.

I search back through mind fog
and spy the fading page,
as the news' print's infernal ink
Bleeds out all the rage.

(Chorus)
Mr Smith flicked a switch in the factory
Now the machinery,
Rusts in its misery.
And the rust belts rise up
And the rust belts rise up,
They grab for the power
Though the lights won't come on again.
And the rust belts rise up
Yeah, the rust belts rise up,
They sense their hour
But the jobs won't come back again.

(Bridge)
Digging for gold
In a seam that's been mined,
Digging for gold
But it's dirt that they'll find.
And we're all mired in mud
Yeah, we're all mired in mud,
All to blame for this madness
hope it don't end in blood.

 (Verse 2)

Sense of outrage

and hate’s flames are fanned,

A retreat into darkness

As the trenches are manned.

I look past tinted glass

And see the truth revealed,

Glory days less than glorious

Where our fate was sealed.

 (Chorus)
Mr Smith flicked a switch in the factory
Now the machinery,
Rusts in its misery.
And the rust belts rise up
And the rust belts rise up,
They grab for the power
Though the lights won't come on again.
And the rust belts rise up
Yeah, the rust belts rise up,
They sense their hour
But the jobs won't come back again.

(Bridge)
Digging for gold
In a seam that's been mined,
Digging for gold
But it's dirt that they'll find.
And we're all mired in mud
Yeah, we're all mired in mud,
All to blame for this madness
hope it don't end in blood.
