Well, a quick dinner with a old co-worker last night turned into a 3 1/2 hour gab fest, so I never got around to anything when I got home. So tonight I just focused on getting a new mix out of the existing song. There are a fair number of changes from the last mix, though I don't know if you guys will notice for good or ill. Consider it a new mix from the previous ones, and let me know your feedback. Does it sound too compressed or bassy/trebbly (or wibbly or wobbly)? Sriracha, I did a fair bit of fussing on the solo, and don't have any idea if you'll like it more or less than previously... and because of that, I didn't even take a stab at your filter suggestions yet -- let me know what you think, or if you just want to mix the solo yourself. Doc, I also tried to de-harsh the funk guitar a bit, but still keep it punchy... please let me know your thoughts. I also think the vocals all fit into the mix a bit better... again, let me know your thoughts... I'm happy to make adjustments. This is yet another headphone mix -- hope the bass isn't too muddy or high/lo.

Bearing in mind I`m no sound engineer ..... and I`m just sounding off my opinion .. :oP Maia's vocal does sound better, further up in the mix - but generally, this mix sounds flat to me (compared to the last mix) ... Re: my vocal, I much prefer what you had produced previously ...

After letting it sit overnight, I'm inclined to agree on all fronts. I actually only used a maximizer to raise the volume just 2 or 3 dbs, but on listening today, it sounds much too compressed to me. As for your vocals, I thought you'd really dig them... shoot. Honestly, I like both versions, and I'd be quite happy to return to the previous vocal sound if I could... but it was created with the plug-ins that I can no longer access, thus my re-engineering them. I'm stuck working with what I have and can't go back, so forward it is. Can you tell me what you liked better about the previous version? I'd like to try to capture as much as I can about what you liked. The main thing I didn't like about the last version was that I thought your voice sounded too brittle/sharp on the high end. I like in this one that I think I have your voice sounding a bit fuller. Did I over compress, or is it the FX, or... ?

Love it! I just focused on the overall vibe of the mix and how it made me feel, and the vox in particular. My vox sounding heaps better, nicely sharpened up and sitting well in the mix. Will leave it for the instrumental virtuosos to comment on the instrumental side of things. :) ...can't wait to hear the repeat return when you do get to it; particularly looking forward to hearing what you've done with my vox, given the awesome job you've done on this first part. :)

I like the overall sound and mix. It's got that tight radio sound. The solo is great - no complaints. The frequency distribution it good - in an analyzer it shows a nice distribution. Loudness has me a bit confused - which speaks to the compression, limiting. Is this a mix or a master? The mix sits at -15.4 ILUFS, -0.5dbFS. That sorta sits two thirds of the way between a mix (I'd expect ILUFS to be -22.5 or so for a mix) and a master (-11.5 ILUFS). So you could open this up by doing something I like to do which is mix in one phase and master in another. Separate projects even. Ditch all the master bus compression / limiting in the mix phase and get it to -6dbFS, -22.5 ILUFS. Then master it in another session to -0.1 dbFS, -11.5 ILUFS. You will see a big change in the dynamics. Like I said - I've no complaints - just grabbed the mp3 and analyzed it and offered some thoughts. I'm happy with this. :D

This is kind-of a hybrid. I mixed it, then added mastering FX to try and give it a more full, polished sound... but I definitely didn't fuss over getting maximum lufs or anything... just focusing on the vibe and mix. That said, I'm by no means a mastering master, so to speak. When we get a final mix, you want to take a whack at mastering it?

There are definitely less dynamics in this mix, with more individual instruments compressed to some degree, then the master buss maximized more than before. I have mixed feelings (pun intended) about it myself, so I'm glad to hear your opinions. I'm inclined to dial back the compression over all... but for now I'll focus on the new section for a few days and let this mix sit a bit -- let me know if any of you have a change of heart regarding the mix. I know a little distance usually helps me get a clearer idea of what I like and don't like.
