I've always felt that the first take Is the "feeling" take and subsequent takes is an attempt to make it perfect, which usually looses some of the original feeling. So if I can get through the first take with minimal flubs, I'll take it every time. I like this mix, it seems like it has much more bottom drive with the bass and drums when they come in. The guitar solo is setting nicely and sounds really good. I'm thinking some more sax injection but not exactly sure where...I'll have to listen a bit more. Joe the sax tone you like is primarily due to the mouthpiece. It's a plastic piece made by Borb Oliver in Brazil with a synthetic reed that I've played for years. Good cane reeds are so hard to find now and they don't last very long, these synthetic reeds last for years, I have one that's 10 years old and still plays just fine.

+1 - even singing, I agree. The first take is straight from the emotion .. might do some 'punch in' here and there .. but never try to perfect what the first take is.

I think maybe come in with sax at 3:50 with a line and then some spacal counterpoint with the piano on the last stanza.
