Creative Brief

This is a lyric that is about a relationship between a father and son, and about regret. The son did something stupid 20 years ago and shame prevented him from returning home to reconcile with his dad. Now his dad's dead and he's walking through the empty rooms that once held so much life and love.

I think this could either work as a singer songwriter song with acoustic guitar, or as a rockier song with electric guitar, but open to various interpretations!

Down Jericho Way

(Intro)

The weeds grow down Jericho Way

Words rust, what's left to say?

(Verse 1)

This morning I shaved off my hair, I

Looked in the mirror, I

Didn't know who I saw,

Your coats still hung on their hooks

Your shelves still stacked with your books

(Chorus)
I wish I could read all the words

All the words that you read,

With your shining blue eyes.

I wish I could hear all the things

All the things that you said,

See those shining blue eyes.

The years pass, nothing's the same

Now weeds grow down Jericho Way

(Verse 2)

Twenty years ago, I

Fell off the wagon, I

Drove drunk straight into Hell.

My throat's been dry since that day

But the shame kept me away

(Chorus)
I wish I could read all the words

All the words that you read,

With your shining blue eyes.

I wish I could hear all the things

All the things that you said,

See those shining blue eyes.

The years pass, nothing's the same

Now weeds grow down Jericho Way.

(Bridge)

Instead, I'm standing here and though I look like you

It’s been twenty years, I'm not the boy that you knew,

Dad, I'm sorry for the mistakes I made

Wish I could re-write the words on my page,

Yeah, I’m sorry for the bad choices I made

Wish I could tell you all this to your face

(Verse 3)

Came home yesterday, I

Walked through empty rooms, I

Don't know when I last cried,

Your coats still hung on their hooks

Your porch still home to your boots

(Chorus)

I wish I could throw my arms

Throw my arms round your neck,

See your shining blue eyes.

I wish I could say all the words

That needed to be said,

See your shining blue eyes.

But the years pass, nothing's the same

Now weeds grow down Jericho Way.
