I got an opinion about sending songs to soundblend. Have you thought about making them 30 second samples till someone buy the song.

You know one thing I would like - create a user type of "Band" where paying members who form bands here can feature their material and treat projects, posts, etc the same as a individual user can. This user type should be free, and available to only paying members.Maybe only let a paying member create the band entity, and then they can add the members, with each member being a "manager" of the band account. Now you could say "Oh, but groups do that". No, not really. It's impossible to go to a group page and see a list of songs immediately. It's impossible to get a list of songs that you can click and play to listen to from a single view.Groups as currently constituted are inadequate. This is why in the past I've resorted to creating a free account with the user being the band - so that this stuff can be featured AS an band. Point is - many people after being here form band type relationships or outright bands and I think there should be a way to feature those entities like individual memebers - being able to share to the community, make posts, etc.

I like the concept! I will definitely implement something along these lines, but probably a little different than might be expected. Here's my thinking: In Kompoz 2.0, Collaborations are pretty much the main component/entity in the platform. In 3.0, I am demoting them slightly, hence the new name "Project". Projects are just a space for songs-in-the-making. A project has all the online tools needed to finish a song. Beyond projects, Kompoz 3.0 will have additional entities (post-production entities) such as Songs, Albums, Collections, and Playlists. So, you'll use Projects to work together, then publish the results as Songs. You will be able to group songs into Albums, Collections, and Playlists. This is where I think the concept of a Band can exist. You might have noticed the "Radio" link in the toolbar of the last video. Kompoz Radio will be the area to feature all of this. Thoughts? Ideas?

I like it. I do think people might want the ability to communicate / interact as the band - maybe not. e.g. post a track to share in the community from the "band", etc.

raf   commented 1yr+2mo ago

Thinking out loud... Assuming there is a "band" concept, and that the band has its own space/page on Kompoz, what would you think about having a Patreon-like model, whereby fans can support the band members through subscriptions, tips, buying songs, etc.?

I'm a fan of the idea in a big way. We do that already external of kompoz for Icarus Machine - I'd love to tie that all together here at the source. :) Provide a way to link to a website, facebook, etc. - make it a platform for marketing and also for sales direct through soundblend of *Albums* as well as singles, and allow grouping of artist materials similar to say itunes, letc.

Love the band concept. As you know me and Tim like to call ourselves ecopunk and create stuff under that heading as a duo. Be great if we could have a profile as the two of us so that all projects are in one place rather than some on my profile and some on Tim's. All the music we created tends to get lost amongst things. A band page could even create it's own artwork for the page, facebook links, videos etc. Think it would be a great move to do this.

The only thing I would really want from Kompoz 3.0 is for it not to 'time out' .... to explain : Let's say I open a dialogue box for a comment or Private Message. If you leave it open for a while (not sure - maybe 5, 10 minutes?) and then start, or keep on typing and you end up with a pretty long message. Usually several paragraphs. .... then try to send it - a message all appear saying something like 'unable to send' or words to that effect. The message will obviously not send. You cannot 'undo' or 'step' back to when the message was in the dialogue field, it is lost and you've wasted your time.....AGAIN !! Major pain in the ass !!!! So. Just solve that please. Kompoz is already a great platform. Good enough. Need more tigers obviously as they see to be a far rare commodity - but software improvements won't fix that. Not sure what will actually . . . . . . I have copied this text - just in case !! ... but I'm not always that switched on . . . : (

Just a suggestion: SUPPORT FOR AAC audio files. Smaller file sizes, better quality - win win. And, import marker/region/etc. data from WAV so markers are added automatically (such as, verse 1, chorus, etc.) and viewable on the waveform. Love the platform, love that there's initiative for improvement. Stay healthy and safe ??

Another suggestion - one of the successful features of another online community I know has an aptly-named "CRAP" section in their forums: Conspiracies Religion And Politics a little nook away from the main pages, where all the folks who don't get enough of a politics fix from Facebook or mainstream news op-ed article comments sections can go argue while leaving the rest of us out of it. I'm not talking about CRAP-oriented music though. That should be in bounds, and hopefully a feature of, a music community.

Yeah, open source it :) I bet you have a lot of developers within the community who'd love to chip in and help out. Myself included. Actually this is exactly how I found Kompoz, I was working on some ideas to build a little web service something very similar to Kompoz

comment.user.userName PLUS

DanChristos   commented 10mo+9dy ago

Also, I'm new so this might change the more I use Kompoz, but I find the UI incredibly un-intuitive, I still haven't figured out the best way to browse collabs, I see the "...because you play guitar" suggestions and I see a few options under "collaborations" such as "newly created", but this seems quite disjointed and I find that I only keep getting the same or similar projects popping up. Maybe you could work on a better UI? and try to improve the (or remove) the algorithm for dispaying suggested projects.

DanChristos   commented 10mo+9dy ago

I'd also like to see more control over the licences for releases. Copyright is evil, based on pure greed. How about including the variety of CC and even go as far as to allow musicians to release their music under their own licence terms.

comment.user.userName PLUS

DanChristos   commented 9mo+29dy ago

I know switching to open source is scary, and a big step, so what about a half way point? You could release an API and allow Plus and Pro members to register as a developer giving them access to the API. You could then allow them space to create and share "views" or something similar with the community.

comment.user.userName PLUS

DanChristos   commented 9mo+27dy ago

Along the same lines of moving towards open source, you could begin to implement a system by which community members can contribute feature ideas, developers can then offer implementation of those features and then allow "beta testers" to be the brave souls who try these newly implemented features out, test, QA, then once the module is stable you guys as the representatives of the corporate entity can do the final tick of approval or denial and bang, you have a nice little hybrid between open source and proprietary organisation. Once something like this is set up it would take a big load off the in-house developers, as well as would reduce costs to the company.

Hi Raf ... I know this has been discussed previously here. We suggested having a place to recycle 'non-accepted' seps. Here is a good example ... https://www.kompoz.com/music/community/a/1047602 Are we planning to have a 'lost and found' section on Kompoz 3 for these kind of submissions that would inevitably prompt a new way of starting collaborations in K-Town?

comment.user.userName

LithiumChris   commented 10mo+8dy ago

How about a greater "Resources" area where members can donate things that don't fit in a collaboration? Things like loopable beats (including recyclable unaccepted drum or other parts), audio/music/instrument/vocal samples, midi chord progression files, even photos/images or other non-musical assets.

Would it be possible (or even desirable) to have some kind of reputation system beyond Endorsements? I think endorsements work well as "yes this person is good at this particular thing", but then the reputation could be linked to how good someone is as a collaborator. Are they polite, respectful, do they take feedback well etc. I've found that a lot of people here are totally great and would deserve a high score on this metric, but there are unfortunately one or two exceptions. Oh yes and please sort out the permitted characters so that we can use apostrophes, amersands and emojis! (there would be a smiley at this point if I could use one!) Looking forward to seeing the update!

Checkbox #2 (optional - defaults to "no opinion") [ ] I feel my voice should not be auto-tuned [x] I hope someone out there can auto-tune I feel these simple check-boxes would make MY life easier.

#1 Be able to choose what type of file your uploading when you upload, multiple select option even, so you don't have to come back in an hour and make those selections. Example, upload all your vocal stems for this song = 8 tracks. Select files, upload, come back in an hour and tell Kompoz they are all vocal stems. This is annoying. #2 Automatically restart Transcoder after 5 minutes. Also annoying is seeing the file you uploaded didn't go through a day later so nobody heard it. #3 Notifications. Maybe the bell could have a dropdown list off new and all so you don't have to click My Studio to get to them. #4 I hate the green Great site though. Saved my music ambitions.

Maybe I just don't know how to do it, but can we treat lyrics a little differently than Collaborations? It would be nice to type lyrics in the search and be given a list of those that are available which don't have music to them yet. Like I said, maybe I just don't know how to look for them but genres search of lyrics would be a huge time saver. I want to sing on a rock song but I don't have any lyrics. Scrolling through a list of available ones and contacting the writer for permission would be awesome.

The Kompoz homepage, and the the language of the website, talks about collaboration. However, I think that the activities that happen on Kompoz more often point to File Sharing rather than genuine musical Collaboration. This may be down to it being easier to build a file sharing website than it is to building a genuine music collaboration website, and/or to the fragility of artistic egos, or the difficulty of discerning the emerging way forward in a genuine collaboration between humans separated by thousands of miles, hampered by the lack of nuance that only isolated ASCII keystrokes can provide. Or all of the above. Probably all of the above, I suspect. I am posting this in the Kompoz 3 chat not because I have solutions for these issues, but because I think it is worth having some big hairy audacious goals (BHAGs) to shoot for, over and above what file sharing functions are about to be introduced, or what colour the buttons should be. In thinking about a global online collaborative music website, I think it is worth talking about how effective collaboration happens, and how a website can facilitate that. I imagine something that is more like multi-threaded project management software, where ideas can branch and be tracked along different threads, where ?Kompozers? can specify (in a way that is enumerated and tracked by the website) the degree to which they consider their composition to finished, or totally raw, or nailed down here but not there, and so on. All of which requires people to believe in the best ideas rising to the top, not just THEIR ideas rising to the top. (Hard to build a website that implements that!) Let's start throwing out ideas for version 5! Think bigger. I believe that to make Kompoz better, we need to be talking about tools to assist collaboration, about the nature (or natures) of collaboration, and how to build comprehensible complexity (ie good UI) into all of that. Everything else is just file sharing.

comment.user.userName PLUS

lazaroujean   commented 3mo+28dy ago

I agree with you. Often collaborations are not collaborations, from my experience, either people do not react, either they accept probably because they are kind enough, either they reject but real collaboration is hard.

carded09   commented 2 days ago

I upvote this. I think a solution would be a button where when you upload the track, there is also an indicator for these things. Seems like a pretty simple implementation. A button for "Yes, allow for the repurposing/derivative/building on this Sep/mix, for collaborators on this project, including spin off's (not including spin off's) or No, don't repurpose this sep/mix. Also a button to indicate if this is intended to be a final mix/sep would also be helpful." I think that would help fix a lot of awkward assumptions/wasted time/misunderstandings.
