It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that Neil rolf has now left us. He died very peacefully and quickly, on Thursday evening, surrounded by his family. I was able to spend a week with him in March, and we spent some time going over old memories and talking about all the amazing people we met via Kompoz. He loved working with you all and we spent some time he last time we met listening to K-town tracks together, enjoying all the amazing music you special people made together. We were talking about the Kompoz Family, how it feels like we're all friends that have never met. He knew that his time was short, and described his passing as "going to the next room". I'm sure he's listening from there, interested to see what we all get up to next. Thank you. Keep the lights burning, everyone. Ian

So incredibly sorry for your loss - as well as a loss for our whole community. Stay strong, and may his musical spirit live on forever here and beyond!

Thank you Mike. We've been friends and musical collaborators since about 1980 or thereabouts. It'll be strange picking up an instrument again. Not sure how that will feel.

Ohhhh, Ian, I hadn't heard!!!! I'll send a message too, to her, but please give my hugs and thoughts to Jane!!! And warm hugs to you, my friend!!! This makes me cry!!! (Be gentle with yourself, Ian!! I know you guys were beyond the closest!) (In beautiful memory, I will ALWAYS remember the times we all made MUCH music together, funny, sad, uplifting... and the video chat when you guys were in his garage!) the tightest and warmest of HUGS!!!

Thank you for the kind thoughts, Kymmm! It's beyond sad really. He wanted us all to carry on making music, enjoying what we'd already created, but moving on. He loved working with you, so thanks for that! and that Skype was very, very funny! I guess its a case of ...." and then the band played on", but I'm not sure I'll be able to for a bit. All love.

Thank you James, its a very beautiful song. You know, one of his favourite things that you ever did was adding a rap about a wolf and a sheepdog to the SHEEP concept album... truly superb. Listening to it again now!

Thank you everyone for your kind words... Neil knew what was coming, and he very kindly, and patiently, showed me how to carry on making rolf music in a house by the sea in March. So I'll do that, if I can... We spent some time talking about what we both do on Kompoz, and found that both of us independently always took time to listen to what collaborators sent in and then wondered how best to make it sound... cutting, pasting, trimming, moving, fx-ing... I never knew that we both did that, as we'd never talked about it before... his attitude was: "if someone has been bothered to record something, them I'm going to be bothered to be gentle with it, make it as good as I can"... I guess that's what he did with me. Thanks, Neil!

Sorry to hear this, Ian. It sounds like he got a lot of joy from music and it's nice to think that this site was a source of pleasure and comfort to him. I think we are all extremely lucky to have such a nice community of people who are prepared to give of their time the way Neil did to create great songs

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I?m going to set up a Rolf archive somewhere here, probably starting with a group that we can all upload our favourite Rolf collaborations to. I might possibly resurrect some tracks we did that never went onto kompoz, as it would be lovely to hear them again. If he?s listening in, I?m sure he?d enjoy that.

Thanks j6. We first recorded (a rather crappy 5 track ep) as Rolc in 1982, so its been a long journey.... we?ve made ambient, electronic, techno, dance, EDM, rock, new romantic, hard rock, metal, folk, alt folk, acoustic, Irish, hippy, hang drum, dub and new wave. There are more than 500 tracks. He always played the good parts. I did the bass and occasionally the fills. If there were vocals to be done, I?d have a stab at them, although we preferred it if there was a real singer. Or real guitarist. Or even real bassist. He was a true original. Fun fact. Where did the name “Rolf” come from? Well it?s a predictive text thing... the. Auto correct always changed rolc to Rolf, and it was easier to go with it.... also if we got drunk, we’d usually do an a Capella version of “tie me kangaroo down” by Rolf Harris. In the pub. Or back garden, if I came to visit. At that point our wives would normally give up and go to bed.

Sorry to hear that. It?s an awful thing. We knew in December, and the prediction was that it would be fast, but the medical folk gave him an extra 5 months, so he was able to spend more time with us, and during that time he was mainly well, so a miracle, of sorts. Best plan is to try and get some together time now.

We did a thing for him about five months ago when the diagnosis was announced, my take wasn't used in the final mix so link might not work: https://www.kompoz.com/music/collaboration/973548/file/973735 Sad drums are never fun to listen to anyway. I hope it wasn't five months of misery, spouse of a guy I've been jamming with since 80's was just diagnosed with stage four lung cancer after going to the doctor about leg pain. We're at that age now I guess.

These are great drums, though! As ever. Yes, I guess were at that age, sadly. Best wishes to your mate. Difficult times.
