I often see projects looking for an engineer to help mix and/or master and that's great, that means projects are progressing and ready to go into the finishing stages! However, the issue I see quite often is that a portion of those projects seeking engineers have no stems/seps uploaded. I'm not declaring myself an engineer, but I do know that isolated tracks are essential to the process. Anyone else ever run across this? On average how often do you see it?

Most of the time. But when people approach me directly and ask me to mix their songs, I tell them what I need. :)

Good point. Do they usually respond understandingly and provide the stems?

Yes, always. Unless they can't, of course. Sometimes they have drum loops that are just a single group stem. I tell them this reduces the potential for a nice mix, but I still try to do my best.

Excellent. I suspected they would be, we have a great community here. My main reason for posting was to make aware those who might not understand the importance of having the stems for their projects if they're asking for an engineer.

Oh, and btw, I normally refuse to work with stems, if there is any chance to get the seps instead. Stems reduce the mixing options very drastically, and if they are not properly mixed, there is hardly anything that can be done to make them fit nicely.

You're right, I often refer to them interchangeably, it's a habit I need to drop, because there is definitely a difference between the two.

Another issue that happens A LOT is that all the tracks are all over the place, i.e. not aligned to a common origin. And very often there are multiple obsolete tracks on the front page, and I have no clue which ones to use. In such cases I ask the project owner to clean up and align everything properly and then send me the result in a ZIP archive.

Yeah, I've ran into this as well. I usually try to do the alignments myself, it can be a real pain somethimes.

I used to do that, and I still do, when my time allows - but that is less and less the case. And, to be honest, I'm starting to lose steam quickly now, when the basic requirements are not met. Must be getting old. ;)

"Must be getting old" I know the feeling......

Yep ! Even allot with one Track only ! I am not an expert but I mean I had read somewhere in the internet that at least it needs two tracks ! :-)

Lol, right? I think I read the "two track rule" in an internet guidebook once:)

Hehe goin back to the private k3 thingy What peoples don't realize is that NOBODY is making money by selling their music on internet Even if ur some music god Money nowadays is done by touring In fact offering ur music to get potential peoples coming to ur shows is probably the best way to go So ''protecting'' ur seps is cute but ain't gonna change a thing maybe all the opposite since u may start building something around ur fellow musicians enthusiasm Staying hidden won't help u And if u find ur stuff on a DIY or cooking utube vids , ain't no big deal

And even when the cooking Video is in a way that someone doesn t like it ! Because they are cooking living cats or their Grandmas as example. Because we have All Right Reversed and also our Recording Rights we can contact the provider of the site and tell them that they please be friendly and remove that music from the Video ! As reason to do this people just need to say that they are the owner and that no one has ask for the use ! My Tip for those people would all the time " Maybe ask the people who have do the music " Asking is totally free other then then most of the music and other content created from really real humans ( here in the internet only in Html ) !

Mmm i often wonder How and why the pervy peoples Boil cats ?? And why use seps for dumb catboilin video When the whole catalog Is rite ch there to use? yer rite ..the Internet is a scary place For pervy peoples to just sit and just wiggle Their toes .. i agree I use dropbox for sending seps if asked..) my daddy once said if a spider bites ya.? bite em back.. i was like yuk dad he said ..exactly thats pervy dont do that..just squish him

That was an extreme example that was used because i had think that the most will say " Ohh That s not fine " ! I do not say that this happens every day for everyone and it must not that extreme ! The idea of my comment that self if someone makes something with content and the content creator has use All Right Reserved / Sound Recording rights come in play too that people can still try or have the chance to stop that use because they own the Stuff they create when they not licence in another way alike CC or Pubic Domain ! Less extreme could be a Cooking Video about a Soup and when the Content Creator does not like Soup he / she can do something against the unwanted use ! Making a Cooking Video is in general nothing really harmful so that may work as an alternative and happens much more often then Cats and Grandmas for sure ! No i will wait if someone ask " What is wrong with a Soup Recipe " ? I am not a Soup Hater and the Soup Recipe was just an example !!! Comunication is alike Music for me - Not my thing so really !

Well, *initially* people are worried about getting their stuff swiped, etc, they think they can make money etc... They may also have friends that they told the site about. Some maybe have real jobs where it may affect them negatively showing their stuff publicly. Also, I am going to take a wild guess something happened legally here that we don't know about, contributing to the change. Don't get me wrong - I am all for having the option to make projects public if the owner wishes to though.

Again , i totally agree with u knowing that all ur work can be downloaded by anyone , ain't good for the site Dunno if u were already here ,there's already several dudes that tried to sell kompoz materials that wasn't their own But as a great chef (a lil obsessed with avocados imo) and one our very own guitar hero once said ''I hope someone gonna steal my stuffs and make a whole lot of money out of it'' On the other hand having ur sep public can bring some cool stuff too i've been contacted to make loops for samplebank (i refused since my gears are way too poor and i'm lazy af) Now if u stand back a lil u understand that it's not a big deal BUT AGAIN i understand peoples can care and having the possibility to make any of ur projects private or public is great and will probably bring more peoples to Kompoz BUT AGAIN making ur project private gonna prevent u from those delish K-Bombs I've posted a project yesterday and this morning looked like a bad day in Falujah There's nothing like KBomb high (i'm still excited)

The best would to have both Public and Private ! I could see my self using Private for as an example something I want to do with an invited person or with a Group of people ! Maybe for some Band alike Project stuff with the same Group of people and so on ! But public is cool for other things ! So to have both is fine as option ! One so and the other so ! What counts is that i can follow the Doc and he doing that Groovy Funky stuff !

x..in what scenereo would be a legal thing ..when you agree to the tos... its over..isnt it ? what can be so bad except maybe someone used your stuff that you already signed off on when you agreed to upload here.. which would be weird imo.. but yea the tos is the sites release of liability and makes all uploads a free for all.. woo woo .. imo usually this thought gets a tomatoe or two....also the whole having jobs /careers thing absolutely the ability to remain anonymous is way important...imo theres important people wanderin' these streets

I think part of the problem is , some people don't WANT to manage a PROJECT , they just list every talent needed then disappear for a week or so , and hope someone has made a song for them .

Just my .02 - I have very often gotten seps after asking, in some other way outside of kompoz. Dropbox, zipped email even...

I've had files offered in the same manner.
