Is Kompoz team dead? I submitted two requests that got never answered, although they say they will in two days. Last blog post is two years old. Last tweet as well. One single post on Facebook in 2017. Is there any development going on? I think it should to keep Kompoz relevant against other collaboration services. There is also room for improvements in my opinion. Were there any updates since two years? What do you think? Is it just a wrong impression I have? Edit : see Raf's answer below that is worth reading.

Well, I think it's not so much a team now as just the one guy and I think he's got 1) a life and 2) is working on another project (although I've not heard much about that lately). In the past many folks here with IT related skills have offered to help and that was never acted on. My guess is that since they formed a partnership and got money (which lasted them for a while) they aren't able to accept community help and so it falls on Raf to deal with stuff when he has the tie and if the issue is significant enough. Most people resort to posts here with their issues - many of which can be worked around and folks will jump in and try and help as they can. I know - not a great answer but it is what it is.

The other day we waited for over an hour for a waiter to come to our table. When he finally showed up he explained to us that he has a life and is working on another project so even though we were paying for his service that is perfectly understandable. So we waited another two hours for our food.

lol...I see what you did there. :D The vast majority of members aren't paying ones - and I've no issue with that. I pay because when I joined I valued the service and wanted to support it. I honestly don't know how I would feel if I just joined and found the lack of support. I guess it would depend upon how much I was willing to deal with. This place is a funny place and it's all about getting integrated with the community as a contributor and collaborator. If you get hung up on a technical issue and get no support, you might never stick around long enough to find the value in it that pope who pay and renew do. Stuff generally works, and if there's a really major issue Raf does seem to show and deal with it. Is that enough for someone to pony up $50 a year? Dunno.

I just paid a subscription and I'm totally new. I had the feeling that it was not maintained before I decided to pay but anyways, what makes it still worth is the community and the heart of the concept. I didn't find any other service that lets you work with your tools and allow you to connect this easily with others. So for me I think it's worth but I'm also now aware that this could end one time.

yeah - I don't think it'll die anytime soon - the paying members must be enough to cover the operating costs - just not enough to pay for paid support. They did try - the got a partner who invested $$, they hired some staff...but it didn't take off, plus a bunch of folks at the time had issues with stuff and left for other sites. I imagine that had an impact (as I assume was the intention - you vote your interest by taking your business away: perfectly fine with that). So, after a couple of years, I think the investment capital dwindled and they fell back to the subscription $$ as the revenue. That, btw, is a most uninformed and total guess, but since things are where they are, I bet it's reasonable. There's a few other sites, but none (that I recall) that offer free members a chance to get their feet wet like this with as good a platform.

Everything generally works ok. Tracks and post go easily 90% of the time. Why upgrade something that dosent have that many problems.

It's not just about fixing the problems. For instance the player stops playing as soon as you click on a different section of the project, there could be a player that keeps playing while you browse through the pages. The comments and conversations are somehow not well organized. I think the interface could be better. Interface is not mobile friendly, etc... there are always things to improve! But here it's also risky because if nobody is maintaining the site, it could one day crash or just close and leave all the community with no option to continue the open work. I hope we would be informed months ahead if the site was to be shut.

The interface seems fine on my iphone, fwiw. I can't speak for android. There's a ton of areas for improvement - don't hold your breath waiting for them. :) Personally I bet the number one thing would be a better search engine.

If you're playing a tune and want to keep it going while you browse elsewhere, just browse using a new tab and the player continues on in the original tab.

just for fun I checked the activity for Boss Raf... 22 days ago/2months and 8 days/3 months and 20 days/ 5months/7 months etc...like every couple a months he checks in to see if we are still making music..., G-Cat about 3 months ago...I guess that's worth my 240.00 a year lol! sort of?

ShannonB   commented 27 days ago

$240/year?! Which plan is that, and what the heck are you getting? I know, I could look it up myself, but I'm lazy, which is probably why I do $5/month. The big deal to me is how many projects I can have. 25 for me, which is grandiose! I might have 15 or so. Most of my collaborations are joined collabs, and that's fine with me. Hey does subscription renew automatically if you don't stop it, or do you have to renew each year? And, this is kinda off-topic, but I am either not impressed with Audacity , or more likely I don't like my Samson microphone. I think it's more trouble than it's worth. I mean, if I have this mike plugged in, I can't do anything else. Kinda egocentric, dontcha think?

Now you guys are scaring me! Maybe Shannon B has a good idea with exchanging emails, but that could be a daunting task for each individual to maintain over the years. Could someone set up some type of perpetual "Friends of Kompoz" registry outside of this site for everyone to list their name and email (or other contact info), maybe on Facebook or some other highly stable platform? Then if the worst happened, folks could reassemble on another site?

I would certainly sign in if there is such a site created. To me the contacts and comradery is more important and much harder to replace than the music tracks.

I too was on a different site than any listed here in this thread and one day, boom!, it was gone. I suppose better safe than sorry. by creating the group here all that anyone would have to do is copy and paste the emails they'd want onto their personal/home computer and for me, I never use Facebook...just don't like it.

I'm here. This post has certainly opened my eyes. First, let me say that Kompoz is never going away. It's been a part of who I am, since I launched it 12 years ago. I've not been engaged much lately, primarily due to the demands of my day job. But I'll change that, and stay more engaged in this community. I've e-known many of you for many years, and I've even met a lot of you in the real world. It's been a great life journey. The site runs itself. The community makes that happen. I guess I've leaned on that and let it coast on autopilot. That should not have happened. So, having said that, the timing of this post is serendipitous. I've been planning, designing, and fleshing out the next evolutionary phase of Kompoz. Gerry and I are meeting this coming Wednesday to go over it. The primary focus is to provide features and tools for session musicians, musicians who want more IP protection for their projects, and to help Kompoz members get more traction on their projects. The prototype is well underway. I'll post more about this soon.

Hey raf, as I said on the other post, love this site, love the people. Just got a little spooked here. It is very reassuring hear that you are so committed to the place that is very important to many of us. Thank you again for keeping our work and contacts safe! I once again apologize for "jumping the gun" on this one.
