Hey Kompoz community! I am about to close my song but before I do I wanted to advice on split sheet for "Sound recording" and "Composition" as it's not really that clear to me. If I created, wrote, recorded an instrument and vocals how is that broken up? Are the lyrics and creation of the song classified as the composition and the instrument is classified as the sounds recording? Likewise for vocals being classified as "sound recording"? Any clarification or guidance in this realm would be appreciated. I want to be as fair as possible. Thanks!

Composition is split between that which is copyrightable (or more) in the case of US Copyright. Sound recording is a split between those participating in the final "recording" or mix. So, in the US, the person(s) creating the melody and lyrics can register a copyright for those. Sorry - harmonic composition w/o melody gets you rats ass. :) But, as the proj owner, you can take credit for the musical direction and take a piece of the comp rights. Sound recording allows you to give the mix/mastering eng a cut. I just make it equal splits across the board for all.

a shorter version this kind of explanation should just be on the project page near the copyright selection part when you create or change the project settings....it would save a lot of explanations, typing, and the questions on community that come about every 3-6 months... i don"t know why i bothered to type this, its not like this suggestion will ever amount to anything, but, whatever. i just lost 3 minutes of my life.

i could have just read that, laughed to myself, and moved on... instead i wasted 3 minutes typing a suggestion that will fall on deaf ears as far as ever getting that simple change done to the site. my fault actually, i should know better. :-I

Thanks for that Sriracha! I do agree i think a clearer understanding\ write up on what this means or how the community uses it would help. It's abit discouraging to wrap your head around at first but I understand it clearly now. Thanks! Don

You do know what you are talking about. And it's you and your rats assness comments (and others) that have helped me the most. ;) I now have all my songs that I wrote the lyrics, melody and sang on, ready for copyright and I'm going through the U.S. site https://www.copyright.gov/registration/ Now anyone making a dime (literally a dime cuz that's all it would make lol) can be sued! mmmmmwahahaha. Jk. I wouldn't do that. But it is the principle of the thing to keep everyone accountable and things respectable. 99% of people on here do that already. That is why this place is so awesome. It's just a good thing to do. I'm grateful for all your help, Billy! In all seriousness, thanks. It can be confusing. :) xoxo
