Hoping some of the Kompoz guitarists may be able to help with something please? My 9 year old son has to do a school project about music. One of the suggestions was to focus on a musical instrument, and he has chosen the guitar! I wondered whether you might be able to share some interesting facts about guitars that would resonate with that age group? Tonight's 'homework' was fun as it consisted of watching various bands playing live on YouTube. We watched songs by The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Extreme, and Metallica, and he now understands the difference between an acoustic and an electric guitar. My son was very animated about The Who's song 'Behind blue eyes' as he said it had been used in an Angry Birds movie! :) Thanks in advance

Well, I think that it is cool how strings work. You know, why the frets are spaced like that and why the notes are in those positions of the neck, why some are ligther and other heavier. I remember there was an old disney video that kind of explain it. I'll post it if I find it. It may be interesting for kids, you could give it a try. This is more of a physics thing, but a cool fact is that the solutions of a stationary wave with constant edges, the string of a guitar for example, are the same solutions than those for a particle confined in a square well of potential, the first problem that everyone solves in a quantum mechanics course. But this may be way over the top.

Thanks Luis. Very interesting. Although I don't play guitar I do own an old acoustic guitar from a time when I thought I might learn how to. We got it out today and watched a YouTube beginners' tutorial that told us about frets and the different strings. My son had fun strumming the guitar and learnt how to do an E Major chord

The many ways that it can be played .. - strumming - finger picking - bending strings - muting strings - glass slide on strings - harmonics

Thanks Ken. Those are great. Read them out to my son today and he was impressed that there are so many ways to play the guitar! During our research so far we've seen guitarists strumming, finger picking, and using a slide guitar.

Yes, .. these topics could easily snowball into something that could over-power your audience. But these days, .. if you were to include video clips .. ? .. if you had a tutorial snippet of let's say, (whether you/your son narrate it) finger picking, and then play 15 seconds of Leo Kottke going to work? Keeping it cryptic, .. I believe would be important. Too much information, is too much. :)

Also interesting to research the differences between the various types and configurations: bass guitar, standard steel string guitar, classical nylon string guitar, baritone guitar, tenor guitar, 12 string guitar, resonator guitar. And that is all without getting into various tunings! Happy to help if you want any audio recordings of these types.

Thanks James. I think the different types of guitar would be cool to include in his project. We noticed different types of guitar when we were viewing various guitarists on YouTube, and Googling pictures of guitars. I think one of the ones he found most striking was an electric double guitar!

Thanks. ha - I wasn't expecting that! Very funny although I'm sure some of the guitarists on here would be appalled to see guitars treated so poorly! :)

Thanks Parm. I didn't know that Angry Birds was from Finland - very cool! We went to see Angry Birds 2 in the cinema recently which was good fun. He knows where Finland is as when he and his younger brother were a bit younger I taught them lots of countries on an Atlas. For the Scandinavian countries I now just have to hold 3 fingers up upside down and they will both recite 'Norway-Sweden-Finland'!
