On Monday, December 2nd, Kompoz will be unveiling a new companion website designed specially for musicians who want more control over their projects. The primary purpose of the new website is to address two things:

  1. It is sometimes very difficult to attract musicians to a collaboration. It is extremely difficult to attract vocalists and professional musicians.
  2. Owning the exclusive rights to a song is important to many artists.

I'll be posting more details over the next several days.

I'm truly excited about the new site. I think it will be a great tool to help you take your songs to the next level.

How does this impact Kompoz.com? Short answer: It does not. We've purposely created an entirely different website so as to not disrupt the mission of Kompoz.com. Kompoz.com will remain as-is, designed -- as always -- to be an open platform for musicians worldwide to create new original music. The new site is an optional alternative.

The IRS requires a 30% withholding on all payments from US citizens to non-citizens. This should already be the case regarding Soundblend but I'm guessing the amount transacted there is not too concerning. However this has the potential of being a more significant amount of money and thus leave you on the hook for paying the withholding tax on all the transactions that take place on your new site.

I would love to hear more how this new site will address these points: 1) It is sometimes very difficult to attract musicians to a collaboration. It is extremely difficult to attract vocalists and professional musicians. 2) Owning the exclusive rights to a song is important to many artists. If the idea is I'm going to offer to pay for people to play on my stuff, well - that's been done a buncha times over the web, and so how is this going to differentiate from say fiverr? Do I get to say I will pay but neg based on not wanting their work? Owning exclusive rights. Well, based on copyright law in the US, unless I write the melody, regardless of the rest of my arrangement, I can't copyright it and so do not "own" it. So if I pay someone to sing lyrics they have written, how do I "own" that? I can "own" the recording of a specific tune, but that's it, and kompoz gives me that now. So how will this new site differ and why would I want to buy in?

comment.user.userName PLUS

liljoe6string   commented 1mo+28dy ago

hum i def smell fiverr here.. but will say RAF just seems to build better mouse traps.. just needs to keep sunflower seeds & cheese commin.. . more often.. So if were right this is a pay for services site.. I think the other Idea is to sell your talent.. Now thats been bulldozed already via various sites.. including some that have vanished.. but will say> it would appear the early birds def get the worms if their in when they launch.. I still think with the right marketing Kompoz could have been much bigger..

I consider myself lucky that I bought one of those old-fashioned popcorn machines with the arm that turns (not a hot air popper). Seems like the popcorn popper is gonna get some serious use watching this launch. An air popper would not be up to the task... I already broke one in less than a year and that was just watching baseball. :)

I've gotten a paid production from them once, done by MonkeyC and Raven. I was happy with it, and they gave me a price break because I was new. I've thought about posting it here in a project, with my original vocal in the files for comparison, not of voices, but of arrangement. Plus, for the sake of the arrangement, some of my favorite parts were left out. I would still do it again if I were made of money. It's between that and going to the local studio. But I think the studio would turn out more expensive; but maybe not, since if I did it a second time, I wouldn't be new anymore. :) I get just as good quality here, and it's free. Not that I want to take advantage of anyone, but I like not having to save up money to get things done. Everyone here is so good to me, why would I want to switch? My husband looks at if differently. He's like, "What if you could make money doing it?" I'm not at that level; some of you guys are. As I've said earlier, I can't afford it, but I don't hold anything against those of you who can.

comment.user.userName PLUS

Sterling   commented 1mo+27dy ago

MokeyC & Raven are the owners of that site. If they don't respond to your projects, your song doesn't make it to the "Trending Projects" in their lounge... The collaboration format needs to change here to be more inviting to users. There are too many people playing the same instruments and seeking the same help from a smaller pool of users. I post less and less these days because the response is always the same...

It just gets harder to do over time when there is no audience for the stuff you post. The only luck I get is from drummers for help wanted, which I'm deeply grateful for. Take a look at sites like soundcloud , youtube, etc. People pay for bots to boost ratings. We live in a society driven by technical hacks.

Can one assume the new site will be a next-level Fiverr?

comment.user.userName PLUS

Midipunk   commented 1mo+27dy ago

Upon first joining this site, the built-in store made me confident yearly fees would be self-sustaining. Five bucks a month worth of banging noises? Hold my beer... Thirty-eight cents last time I looked. A while back somebody posted a video about auditioning bass players for hire ranging from cheap to $160'ish, turns out it was "Fiverr"; aside from that and this thread I've never heard of that site. The video is called "I Paid Bassists to Play an IMPOSSIBLE Bassline..." and the editing is painful but people apparently love that stuff. The lure of a quick couple bucks could attract more musicians to the just having fun department. It might be kinda fun to troll for a thirty-eight cent payout.

Yep. The store (SoundBlend) was more of a site to showcase finished collaborations than an actual profit source. Because nobody buys music anymore (anywhere). A different revenue model is needed. For most bands today, that usually means ticket sales and merch. For online musicians, the new site launching Monday is one option.

. . It will be interesting to see what the new website offers/entails and how it will differ from K-Town. ... going off at a slight (but relevant?) tangent . . . . . . I am always bemused by the compete disproportional balance of 'musical trades' in K-Town. Lots of Musicians. Guitarists. Bassists. Drummers. Pianists/keys. etc . .. etc . . . Mostly good. Lots very good. Some exceptional. Even the 'rare' talents like the saxophone are represented . . . . . then why are there so few vocalists here in comparison? Never been able to figure that out. BandHub, for instance, had a much better ratio of all 'talents'/disciplines. There were some awesome singers there. BandHub went tits up this year. Anyone have any theories on this disproportionate phenomenon?

comment.user.userName PLUS

ShannonB   commented 1mo+26dy ago

I will answer to the best of my ability as a former vocalist. It is very difficult to sing a song that you have never heard sing before, which is usually the case in a brand new song. That's what makes singer/ songwriter so much more appealing in a place like this. If you're strictly a vocalist, trying to arrange those vocals for someone who already knows what he/ she wants is sometimes not worth the struggle, and can even Rob the joy of singing.

comment.user.userName PLUS

ShannonB   commented 1mo+26dy ago

*sung before

comment.user.userName PLUS

ShannonB   commented 1mo+26dy ago

Besides that, there are no moral choices to be made in playing instruments; the same cannot be said of singing. I mean, who wants to sing garbage? There are fewer than you might think.

comment.user.userName PLUS

Line6Freak   commented 1mo+26dy ago

Hmmm Perhaps I wasn?t very clear in my writing. My bad. I usually (almost always) upload a piece of music that?s basically a music bed requiring a Topline. In other words, it is up to the singer/songwriter to choose the lyrics and invent a melody. You lot just seem in short supply. Do you think there are far less singer/songwriters here than the other skills ...?

comment.user.userName PLUS

ShannonB   commented 1mo+26dy ago

Now that is completely possible! And might explain why most bands are made up of 3 instrumentalists and one singer! I have to admit I have no explanation for those ratios.

comment.user.userName

JimmyJamJamJimmy   commented 1mo+26dy ago

Instrument players "sing" with their instrument. Vocalists have only their physical body to use, so....in that regard, the ratio is probably equal. A band or song collaboration already has the instrument "singers" and the last one ( usually ) to try and fit their instrument into the mix is the vocalist. It's possible that by the time a song is ready to be sung over, it's already out of the wheelhouse of whatever singers are available......or........they don't like the song, key, etc.....

comment.user.userName

JennyK   commented 1mo+25dy ago

Yeah, something like that. When I read in a comment on a production more or less done, "All we need now is vocals", I hate to say it but it doesn't make me want to jump on it. Maybe singers are all egocentric divas. It's possible. But when all that's wanted is "just vocals" when working out melody, often lyrics, mood, and put in enough time to offer a performance a singer feels good about... When fitting voice to music feels like a rushjob, ... Yuck. I'm not saying it's always that way, don't get me wrong, but often enough to make me hesitate. And since this thread is regarding perhaps having the opportunity to be compensated for it, I'm all for it. I would rather get paid for a job like that instead of being expected to put heart and soul into just another instrument simply for the fun/love/passion of singing. I tis work. It's unpaid, hard work, and passion and emotion doesn't halp pay for the gear I need to do these "just vocals". In this new gig-economy, we are told that customers will pay what they think you are worth if you offer them value. Well, if it would come to pass, that someone feels I give value and are ready to pay for it, perhaps I would feel more valueable, more inspired to work, that my abilities and time are worth something.

comment.user.userName

JimmyJamJamJimmy   commented 1mo+25dy ago

A "Fiverr" type platform has it's advantages and drawbacks. It definitely solves the problem of people seeking out a particular instrument that they have trouble finding here. Some players that are "hired" WILL solve the problem you had, while others will disappoint. The difference is that you're paying for it ahead of time. It's a crapshoot to a point, but at least you're not waiting endlessly to add a particular instrument to the song you're attempting to finish.

That's fair criticism. I'll own that. To be honest, I will tell you that I did become a bit disheartened at times. Running Kompoz has its challenges. Not many are willing to pay for membership and running Kompoz is expensive. The Community page (which you listed as something that makes Kompoz unique) is sometimes a source of fights, trolling, and spam. I spend a lot of time moderating, and it takes a toll. I get frustrated. I put a lot into building Kompoz and when people abuse it, I ask myself why I do it. At times, I have considered removing the community page and restricting commenting on tracks to paying members. But more often than not, the good outweighs the bad. When I hear the music that is produced, I completely reverse my thoughts. It's amazing to me to watch the collaborative process, and witness the music that is produced. I love it. I see members join, create collaborations, then disappear. When a member closes his/her account, I ask him/her why. The most common answer is that others do not contribute to their collaborations. It's a tough problem to solve on Kompoz. Which is why I am launching this new site. It solves for this specific problem. I am really excited about it. I have been running Kompoz for 13 years now. It's not going anywhere! It's a big part of my life. In other words, I'm saying to you that I am dedicated to keeping Kompoz running and growing -- both Kompoz.com and the new site launching Monday.

It is. I'm assuming this site will remain as is and the other will be a pay-for-play scenario similar to Fiverr. If someone cannot find people to collaborate here and are serious about getting their project finished, they have the opportunity to pay players to get it done. One can only hope that the problems Fiverr DOES HAVE were given a hard look, in order to be avoided on this new site. Time will tell I suppose......

No offense to anyone...but all this talk of paying for someone to play on one of my songs? I have listened to tons of tracks on here and have not heard anyone I would pay. Maybe they are on this site, but I can't find them. I tried finding songs to join. I spent hours before I just could not take it anymore. There is way too much content obscuring the hidden gems. I was working on making one of my projects more complex but I got trolled and lost interest. So I just marked it "finished". Where is the cake?

comment.user.userName

JimmyJamJamJimmy   commented 1mo+24dy ago

You'd basically be appraising "new blood" from outside this community and then decide if you want to pay for their services or not. One reason I can see why there's another option ( site ) coming is for the very reason you stated. It stands to reason that if there's a few bucks to be made, players who otherwise wouldn't be here will be on the new site. That doesn't automatically mean "more talent" per se, but if enough players join the new site, there's a good chance there will be a percentage of talented people more than willing to sell their services. It's up to the person "looking" for a vocalist or a guitarist, etc.....to sort out the best choices by listening to their audio profile and finished work examples. In the end, people can decide to stay here and do what they've been doing. Nothing wrong with that. They can also decide to try the new site and services.
