I now use a dedicated preamp with Telefunken NOS ECC83 Smooth Plates on drum tracks when mixing. The drum signals leave the DAC, go though the tubes - then back into ProTools via the ADC (with a latency of around 8 samples). I've found this method particularly beneficial for the lower frequency components such as bass guitar - and, of course, drums. Makes them warmer and more 'believable'.

I've started posting under Forums & Links relevant information on various tubes, preamp settings. Wanting to find out if there are any benefits to using different tube types and do they affect the audio sound, either voice or instruments using a mic. I have purchased three tubes as a replacement for the stock 12AX7 standard preamp tube. I bought a low gain (typically associated with blues, a warm audio sound), a medium gain, and a high gain tube. I've never really felt that the mic preamp made a lot of difference for recording sax, so this is more of an experiment on my part. Any information that you have or come across concerning mic preamp settings, modifications, tube types, please feel free to add to the forums and post any associated links under the Link tab. Thanks ~Nemonty

Hi there! Happy New Year!! I just bought a new tube pre-amp and mic. I know nothing about these things, just found bargains and love the sound. Do I deserve to be in this club with you? Xx

I've posted 3 URL's for 12AX7 tubes for microphone tube type preamps under "LINKS" tab. Some very good info if your considering upgrading the vacuum tube(s) in your mic preamp.

This is a discussion group on microphone tube preamps and the various vacuum tubes available for modification or upgrading your existing preamp(s).  This is only for MICROPHONE preamps/vacuum tubes, NOT instrument amps.  So those of you that have experience with analog preamps with vacuum tube amps, please join in the discussion as to your experiences with different tube brands.

My particular interest is upgrading low end mic preamps (ART, Presonus, Behringer etc.) with OpAmps and vacuum tubes (typically 12AX7 tube).  Please post any links for related information, I have a couple good reads that may be helpful for those that want to learn more and general interest.
