Ok, here is my first attempt at doing an instructional video. Remember I am NOT a video guy and my southern Ohio mumble jumble accent comes out rather well here :) Thought this might be helpful for some newbies. What is the difference between "Mic" "line" and "inst" on my audio interface.

yur marshalls beautiful ... ok so i have a DUM ass question... i cant find anything out about it... Ok my m audio has "INSERTS" on it... its says You can run an fx or eq or other shit thru that while u recorded... really doesnt fuking work... my question is how do you run into it... Say i have a distortion pedal i want to run in the insert... my pedal has an in and out... im micing my amp so im going into it and the XLRs are going to each side of the audio... I tried running the dist pedal out to one insert and the in to the other... when i plug into the insert I get zero input.. in record mode... Any thought would make me workship u more.. thnx

Hmmm...first off, I'm not worthy of worship, trust me :) Let me ask this first: what exactly are you trying to accomplish using the pedal? Are you wanting to use it after you record ( for adding to the mix) or during recording of your mic'd guitar?

Oh wait a sec....is your "insert" just a single 1/4' jack? If so you would need a "insert" or "Y "cable to use it. The cable would be a "tip" "ring" sleeve" on the one end and the other two ends would just be "tip & "ring" (like a guitar cable). Actually "tip & "Sleeve" and "Ring" & "sleeve".

I always need to get a up close physical look at these things. But you may need to select a different output to run the signal through the channel inserts if signal is not passing through it then signal must not be going to it. If it is plugged in right and your not getting signal,Then the problem has to be routing

youguz rock!! the Y cable makes sense.. so in out on the distortion is the Y part, and the singal line to the the insert.. yes? Im just experimenting.. to see wht putting something n the insert would do..now where did i put that Y cable.. oh wait i dont have one.. FUCK!! LOLOL GET one tomorrow let ya know how she flies.. thnx boyz

What is the exact model and brand of your interface?? I will search it online and see if I can tell what you got there.

I think the main idea is to use a DI box (Whirlwind has some decent ones at about $30 or you can get a really good Radial passive DI). Then you get the XLR out of the direct box (direct signal) into your interface and the "thru" output of the DI box to the amplifier which is then miked and feed the microphone signal back into the audio interface. Like this: http://blog.sonicelectronix.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/jcr-reamp-app-1-lrg.jpg I guess the first stage of guitar out I guess could be done with a Y cable if you have a direct instrument input on your audio interface.

This approach is what I use too Alex. Recording while hearing my amp or Axe-FX and recording a direct guitar track gives you all the options like re-amping, or blending a Amp Sim with the mic'd signal etc...

For Kompoz since there are so many changes I either reamp at the end when the parts are finished or just leave the track with amp sims. For my solo stuff I reamp most of the tracks. We just finished a track where the sims just wouldn't "sit" right, nothing wrong individually but the mix just wouldn't "gel". When I reamped the performance it just mixed itself. http://https://www.kompoz.com/music/listen/release/673370

Nice video! And nice gear too! Just to add some more to the topic: Down here in Brazil I bought my "boutique" amp from a local company called Sollo Amps. 20W mini amp, lunch box like... They ship with a Line Output, totally integrated to the pre/FX-Loop/power sections! It's really nice, so I can just plug this Line out into the interface Line Input, then use an IR loader ... Also have a Peavey Valveking MH 20W (bought from Guitar Center last year in Vegas) that comes with a XLR output, but this one is already cab-simulated, ready to be recorded as a track without IR loader though
