I?m finding that 6ths, 7ths and 9ths can be useful when you have two consecutive notes in a bar of the melody. For example if you?ve got a C and a D in the same bar of the melody, an F6 or Cadd9 gives good harmonic support. Also, I find suspended chords can be used to eliminate a tritone dissonance against the melody. Suspending the ii or V chords can eliminate a dissonance when the melody crosses over the 4th or 7th scale degree. Anyone else have specific uses for chord variations?
