I?m finding that 6ths, 7ths and 9ths can be useful when you have two consecutive notes in a bar of the melody. For example if you?ve got a C and a D in the same bar of the melody, an F6 or Cadd9 gives good harmonic support. Also, I find suspended chords can be used to eliminate a tritone dissonance against the melody. Suspending the ii or V chords can eliminate a dissonance when the melody crosses over the 4th or 7th scale degree. Anyone else have specific uses for chord variations?

I think if the melody doesn't dwell too long on a dissonant tone as it moves from one chord tone to another chord tone, maybe it's not that big of a deal? Or maybe that is more of a jazz mentality? Is the tritone only a factor when you're playing the IV or vii chords (meaning the only places it occurs diatonically)? I'm not super strong on theory. I just try to avoid perfect fourths over any major chords.

I agree. A perfect 4th over a major chord sounds like mud. Tritones I think are ok in jazz because jazz is heavy on dissonance. Same goes for blues rock. But it might sound out of place on soft rock, a pop or R&B ballad, or acoustic singer songwriter stuff. It could come into play any time you have a chord using the 4th or 7th scale tone of the key you are in. If the chord has one of those and the vocal melody has the other, you get a tritone clash. I like the sound of a tritone but not on the vocal. And try some fresh motz on the bridge. It?s really good.

Interesting stuff. I'm going to get out the guitar later and hum some notes over chords, like you are describing. See how it sounds. A little parmesan during the intro, mozzarella during the bridge, and mascarpone during the outro. BAM!

Here is a nice one I just discovered. Play a chord that is just 1-5-6 (no third). Then add a melody that toggles between the 3rd and 4th. Beautiful. The ambiguity of being neither major or suspended frees up the melody to treat it as both, while the 6th adds a harmonic relationship bolstering both of those melody notes. I?ll have to find a way to work that into a song.

Yeah, that does have a nice sound. You could call that chord the V chord and basically do IV-V the whole song. I like the sound of that with 1-5-7 for the IV chord. Under the Pressure by The War on Drugs is basically IV-V the whole way, and has a really cool vibe. I Don't Live Here Anymore by The War on Drugs is also IV-V (another great song).
