Hi everyone, Basic question here. What steps do you take to make a music production after downloading an acapella? I understand that knowing the key of the vocalist is helpful in creating a harmonized melody, and that pitching the vocals may be of use. What are your thoughts?

I've done a few basic collaborations on here, where I've added basic chord progressions and ideas to acapellas. It's a fun way to build a song, because you can play with the key and mood of the song and place the vocal phrasing in places the original artist may not have intended. Knowing the key and tempo is useful for sure. There was a collab recently by Wire-and-wood, it might be worth listening to how everyone approached that isolated vocal. https://www.kompoz.com/music/collaboration/1094178

I think it's good to listen to the lyrics, tone and feeling of a voice too, interpret their performance and think how the music might reflect the message, or not.

I think figuring out the key of the song is step one (at least for me, unless I immediately hear some kind of accompanying riff or melody). Then choosing a chord progression that fits the melody. This can completely change the mood and color of the song, depending on whether you use straight-forward, expected chords, vs adding some dissonance. Then coming up with an arrangement, like choosing the instrumentation, designing synthesizer sounds, finding rhythmic elements, writing parts for each instrument, and deciding when they come and go. That is not to say the process is so linear, but that is my general approach.

I'd say if they stay in any key, they're pretty good vocalists. If they wander too much, I'd either ask them to sing again it while listening to a PAD in the key they're singing to. If it's rhythmic, I'd even consider asking them to sing it to a click. But I've done it by pitch correcting to a key and a time, and then creating the back track to that. It's a long process. I think the shortest cut (for me) would be to figure out chords and time, make a scratch guitar back track and ask them to sing to it. You can do a LOT in post, but why? Dave

Thank you, As far as scales go, for melody development, would you consider Pentatonic, and Major scales a good jumping off point?

Pentatonic scales have a homey familiar feel. And of course all the notes are contained in the major scale. 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 steps of the major scale are the pentatonic scale. I'd not worry so much about what scale you are using, Just find a melody you enjoy singing and then fit chords to it. They might end up all contained in the pentatonic scale, they might be contained in the major or minor scale within the key. Or they may wander outside the key a bit. It's good to have a framework but not be overly bound by it.... but don't break "rules" just because they are there. You can do a lot within a key. Let the melody take you where it wants to go, and then worry about harmony later. My opinion. worth all you paid for it! Dave
