Lyrics

21st Century Odysseus

Sirens of the social media
How sweet your voices sing
Fake news and schizophrenia
Hard facts are not your thing
Oh to be like Odysseus
Resist the tawdry temptress
Listen but remain attached
To the mast of common sense

Odysseus, hero of Troy,
Never wanted to go to war.
The Oracle cautioned him to stay
On Ithaca's gentle shores.

Yet bravely his sail he set
And many a battle fought he
For years and years, the war did rage
To set lovely Helen free.

Sirens of the social media
How sweet your voices sing
Fake news and schizophrenia
Hard facts are not your thing
Oh, to be like Odysseus
Resist the tawdry temptress
Listen but remain attached
To the mast of common sense

Homeward bound for Ithaca
The journey with dangers was fraught
Tempests and monsters, curses and spells
The Gods, they would stop at nought

Odysseus, by Circe warned,
Used all of his cunning and guile.
His men attached him to the mast
Approaching the Sirens' isle

Sirens of the social media
How sweet your voices sing
Fake news and schizophrenia
Hard facts are not your thing
Oh, to be like Odysseus
Resist the tawdry temptress
Listen but remain attached
To the mast of common sense

Beeswax in their ears, the crew
Did not hear the sweet Sirens sing
Saw the Sirens for what they were
Snakes for hair and carrion wings

Odysseus strained at his ropes
So enchanting was the song
His eyes saw beautiful ladies
Could not believe he was wrong

So it always is with humans
We hold on for grim death to our illusions
Prisoners of our perceptions
We fall prey to lies and deception
Those who think differently we start to hate
Can we stop this confusion?
Can we look for solutions?
Or is it just too late?

Sirens of the social media
How sweet your voices sing
Fake news and schizophrenia
Hard facts are not your thing
Oh, to be like Odysseus
Resist the tawdry temptress
Listen but remain attached
To the mast of common sense
