This is a song that was inspired by a trip my wife and I took to New Orleans over the 2022 Christmas / New Years Holiday.
I was quite taken with all of the graffiti art around the city.
I was reading two different New Orleans writers just before, and also during the trip.
Some of the lyrics were derived from the novel "Ballad of Perilous Graves" by Alex Jennings and from the poem "Dear Masoch" by Andrei Codrescu.
Chorus:
She had jet black hair locked into dreads
Hung with brass crescent moons and puka shells
Bright spots of color stood out on her cheeks
She sang songs about angels just before they fell
Verse 1
She was a girl in search of interpretation
Chasing dreams impossible to draw
The rapture of understanding nothing at all
With no need to follow the Law
Instrumental Chorus
Verse 2:
Her entire world was covered with graffiti
For no one to own or buy
High enough to even touch heaven
Her tags were designed to defy
Chorus
Verse 3:
She was a girl living life in overdrive
Infected by illegal sales of pain
leaning on poetic exploitations of youth
She offered up a mirror to explain
Chorus
