Artist's Notes

I set some lyrics to a composition written and recorded as a backing track by Neils Sorensen and added some guitar work. Susan Fidler took a melody idea and modified it, added some harmony, and this song was the result.

Light romantic comedy song

Lyrics

Johnny McRue

My friends said I should try this dance.
    ?Might be something to do.
?Kinda? hoped that you?d be here too,
But all I see is Johnny McRue.

Johnny?s a great guy, nice looking too
Has a spread just outside of town.
?Always polite, ready with a laugh,
But he can?t dance like you do.

Now here he comes with his two left feet.
    What?s a girl to do?
So I smile real big and set down my Coke.
Sure wish he could dance like you do.

( Break )

Later that evening when you showed up
There was little that I could do.
?Tried to catch your eye a couple of times,
But you only saw the girl with you.

Johnny noticed my glances your way.
?Just gave me a grin or two.
?Held my and we whirled ?round the floor,
But he can?t dance like you do.

Then his dancing caught fire and he stayed with the beat.
    What?s a girl to do?
So I smiled real big and looked in his eyes,
But he can?t dance like you do.

( Break )

Time has passed and a few things have changed.
    My last name is McRue.
We have a little spread on the outside of town,
    And I love Johnny McRue.

I hope this letter reaches you.
    I?m trusting the US Mail.
?Sorry it has to be addressed,
    Care of the Birmingham Jail.

Johnny still dances with his two left feet.
    What?s a girl to do?
So I smile real big and hold his hand,
But he can?t dance like you do.
